FB superb in all three phases in memorable win

WILMINGTON -- The Heidelberg University football team enjoyed a colorful 57-7 win at Wilmington College.  After building up a 35-7 lead at halftime, two exceptional plays on special teams stole the show.

KEY STATS:
  • QB Drew Sims was an efficient 12-for-17 passing for 160 yards and four touchdowns.
  • RB Montavious Yearby notched his 14th career 100-yard game, piling up 107 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries.
  • WR Dimitri Penick had four catches for 99 yards and a touchdown … Oliver Kelleher scored his first two collegiate touchdowns.
  • CB Tramon Wiley picked off another pass and now has an INT in each of the last two games.
  • The Heidelberg defense held Wilmington to 174 yards of total offense.

SYNOPSIS:
  • After turning the ball over on their opening drive, Heidelberg was able to keep the Quakers off the board by blocking a 28-yard field goal attempt.
  • Following a lead block from Jarin Curtis, Yearby ripped off a 61-yard run on the ensuing possession. It helped set up a 13-yard strike from Sims to Kelleher.
  • After a defensive three-and-out, Penick dove and caught a 34-yard strike from Sims that led to a one-yard plunge from Yearby.
  • Wilmington scored late in the first, but Heidelberg responded with a five-play 50-yard drive that was set up by a 37-yard kickoff return by Robert Davis.  The drive, capped by a nine-yard pass from Sims, also included a leaping 34-yard reception -- both hauled in by Penick.
  • Early in the second, Sims hit a wide-open Devin Conyer for a 26-yard touchdown.
  • Kelleher capped the scoring in the first half with a tip-toe touchdown in the left corner of the zone, scoring from 10 yards out. Branden Steckel made all five PATs in the first half.
  • Parker Smith ended the first half for the defense with an emphatic sack on 4th-and-7.
  • Curtis scored his first HU touchdown on HU's opening drive of the third quarter, bouncing off the right end of the line and over the line from six yards away.
  • Norris picked up a bouncing punt at the Heidelberg 49 and was shoved backwards as four Quakers converged on him.  Undeterred, he knifed between them and broke the return toward the 'Berg sideline. Running down the sideline, a thunderous block by Solomon Sandoval sprung Norris for the touchdown. A blocked PAT gave HU a 48-7 advantage.
  • Wiley's pick came on an overthrown ball in 'Berg territory late in the third.
  • A steady dose of run plays from Curtis and Chayne Treharn helped HU score its final touchdown of the game -- a 10-yard rush off the left side by Curtis.
  • With the game well in hand, HU faced 4th-and-9 from the Wilmington 36.  Rather than punt or go for it, Head Coach Scott Donaldson sent in Steckel.  The reigning OAC Player of the Week delivered -- blasting a school-record 53-yarder.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
  • With the victory, Heidelberg improved to 6-2 on the season, 5-2 in OAC action.  Wilmington, now led by former HU assistant coach Corey Fillipovich, slipped to 3-5.
  • Steckel's kick broke the HU record of 49 yards, set by AJ Morrison in 2015 against John Carroll.
  • The punt return touchdown by Norris was Heidelberg's first since Russell Ramsey fell on a wind-blown punt in the end zone in 2018 against Ohio Northern.
  • Heidelberg's defense held an opponent under 200 yards of total offense for the first time since they limited the same Quakers to 185 yards at Wilmington in 2016 -- six years ago, to the day.
