Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

No Cap, Berg slips past Comets 3-1

TIFFIN -- Back at home for the penultimate game of the season, the Heidelberg University volleyball team picked up a spirited 3-1 win over Capital University on Wednesday night. As a team, HU hit .258 in the 25-11, 21-25, 25-20, 25-10 victory.

Though Heidelberg improved to 8-17 overall, 3-5 in the OAC, their hopes of working their way into next week's six-team OAC Tournament were dashed by John Carroll's 3-2 win against Mount Union.

Ashley Foster led the offensive attack with 12 kills while Anamya Truex was close behind with 11.  Truex attacked at an impressive .429 clip.  Freshman Gabby Wolfe had eight kills on 16 swings without an error.

Serving up the offense, Kelsey Custenborder recorded 25 assists while Julianna Pena notched 19.

Libero Nicole Thomas amassed 25 digs and Jeylo Hernandez Rodriguez had 10.  At the net, Truex was in on five of Heidelberg's seven blocks on the night.

Capital (8-17, 0-8) was outmatched in the first set -- at one point conceding 11 straight points to Heidelberg.  The 11-0 run came as part of a 16-1 stretch for the Student Princes, who played some of its most aggressive volleyball of the year.

The Comets trailed 13-7 in the second before a fierce rally.  The visitors scored six straight and eight of nine midway through the set, taking an 18-16 lead.  From there, they limited HU's attack and tied the match.

Heidelberg struggled to find a rhythm in the third set, trailing by five on two occasions. Tied at 18, the Student Princes closed the set on a 7-2 run that included kills from unusual sources -- Thomas and Custenborder.

The Berg removed all doubt with a 9-0 run in the fourth, taking a 15-5 lead.  Haylie Sewell had two kills in a late 5-0 swing that pushed HU up 23-8.  A Capital service error closed the match with a whimper as the hosts celebrated the win.

Heidelberg returns to Seiberling Gymnasium on Saturday, closing out the season with a Senior Day tussle with Wilmington College.  The match is slated for a 1 p.m. start
