TIFFIN -- The Heidelberg University volleyball team's 2022 season came to an end with a four-set loss to Wilmington on Saturday. Despite the Senior Day excitement, the Student Princes were unable to pull off a win against the Fighting Quakers – 25-18, 23-25, 25-18, 25-17. Heidelberg finished the season with an 8-18 record.
Kelsey Custenborder ended with 17 assists and six digs on the day. For her career, the Versailles native has amassed 1143 assists along with 244 digs.
Julianna Pena finished with 12 assists and seven digs. As a career, she has 1844 assists which is good for ninth place all-time at Heidelberg. She also ended with a total of 80 service aces.
Fifth-year
Ashley Foster concluded the day with ten kills and three blocks. Over a total of 197 sets, she has tallied 287 kills and 141 blocks.
Heidelberg struggled in the first set, unable to take the lead. A Wilmington service error and service ace were the final two points before the Quakers went on a 6-0 run before the Tricolor eventually fell 25-18.
The second set consisted of eight lead changes. The final switch-up came from an
Anamya Truex kill, one of her six for the day. The two teams went back and forth, one point each for the last eight points before Foster hit the lethal set point for a 25-23 victory.
Wilmington built up a sizable cushion in the third, leading by as many as eight. Heidelberg got within five, but it wasn't enough and ended 25-18.
Looking to go to five sets, the Student Princes just couldn't keep up. Heidelberg took their final lead at 12-11 before slowly drifting away to wrap up 25-17.
Other notable performances included libero
Nicole Thomas with 20 digs and Jeylo Hernandez-Rodriguez with 10 digs.
Grace Porter tallied four blocks followed by Foster with three.
Lexi Evak had nine kills.
