TIFFIN – The Heidelberg University women's soccer team couldn't ask for a more perfect Senior Day, occurring on Homecoming weekend with beautiful weather. They faced Marietta in a brawl that ended in a 2-0 Student Princes victory.
Heidelberg improved to 6-7-2 and 2-5 in the Ohio Athletic Conference while Marietta fell to 3-10-1 and 2-5 in the Ohio Athletic Conference.
Seven seniors and three grad students were recognized before the game:
Meredith Bruce,
Megan Hamilton,
Victoria Perez,
Ainsley Tucker,
Lexi Langwasser,
Audrey Kaufman,
Liv Bean,
Sydney Shaffer,
Bekah Thomas and
Courtney Moggio.
In the first half,
Syd Hewer struck gold -- finding her second collegiate goal at 24:32. The freshman picked the ball up off of a Marietta pass, which she shot straight at the goalie. Madison Miller fumbled the catch and it sailed straight into the net for a 1-0 'Berg lead.
With 11:06 left in the second,
Madi Lause took a strong shot past Miller, who didn't flinch. Assisted by
Audrey Kaufman, that was Lause's fifth goal and Kaufman's league-leading seventh assist of the season.
The defensive backline helped save numerous shots. In goal,
Meredith Bruce had five saves of her own.
In total, Heidelberg outshot Marietta 22-12.
The Heidelberg women's soccer team will be on the road for their final two games of the season. On Wednesday, they travel to Columbus where they will face Capital for a 7 p.m. start time.
