BLUFFTON, Ohio -- On Saturday, the Heidelberg University volleyball team split their final two matches at the Sommer Center Spiketacular. The Berg fell to Trine in the opener, 3-1, then regrouped to upend Ohio Wesleyan, 3-2. The Student Princes finished the weekend 2-1, improving to 3-1 on the season.
For their efforts,
Maddie Szawranskyj and
Sarah Oney were named to the all-tournament team.
Against Trine, the Thunder took the first two sets before a 'Berg win in the third. Heidelberg nearly forced a fifth set but fell in the fourth, 25-23.
Szawranskyj led HU with 10 kills against Trine.
Julianna Pena set up the offense with 22 assists. Defensively, Oney tallied 27 digs and
Anamya Truex was a part of four blocks.
Against OWU, Heidelberg dropped the first set before winning the next two. The Battling Bishops forced a fifth set, which HU won 15-12.
Again, it was Szawranskyj leading the offense with 20 kills.
Liana Petitti contributed 16 kills.
Pena picked up 31 assists in the victory while
Kelsey Custenborder added 16.
In the back row, Oney had 30 digs and
Nicole Thomas had 15. Pena added 17 digs.
At the net, Truex, Szawranskyj and
Grace Porter all picked up four blocks.
Heidelberg returns to action next weekend at the Pam Briggs Memorial Tournament co-hosted by Otterbein and Capital. HU will face Geneva and Hanover on Friday, and Frankiln on Saturday -- all at Otterbein's Rike Center.
