WESTERVILLE, Ohio -- The Heidelberg University volleyball team split a pair of 3-1 decisions on opening night of the Pam Briggs Fall Classic, co-hosted by Otterbein and Capital University. HU beat Geneva in the opener, then fell to Hanover in the nightcap.
On the day,
Maddie Szawranskyj led the offense with a combined 22 kills.
Liana Petitti was right behind with 21 kills.
Grace Porter and
Anamya Truex each had 12 kills.
Julianna Pena had 42 assists on the night while
Kelsey Custenborder notched 29.
Defensively,
Sarah Oney had a team high 35 digs and converted 62 of 63 serve-receives. Petitti was next with 23 digs.
Jeylo Hernandez Rodriguez added 17 kills. Szawranskyj added 14 and Pena had 11.
Heidelberg moved to 4-2 on the season.
Against Geneva, the Student Princes won the first set, 25-20. The Golden Tornadoes edges The Berg in the second, 25-23. From there, Heidelberg drubbed Geneva, 25-14 and 25-13.
After hitting.091 in the second set, HU hit.300 in the third and .467 in the fourth.
In the second match, Hanover took the first two sets, 25-18 and 25-20. HU staved off the loss with a 25-22 win in the third, but Hanover took the final set 25-14.
The Berg returns to action at Otterbein's Rike Center on Saturday. The varsity team will face Franklin at 10 AM before the junior varsity squares off with Otterbein's reserves around 12 p.m.
