BEREA -- A few too many mistakes proved costly as the No. 22 Heidelberg University football team lost on the road at Baldwin Wallace, 20-10. Tied at 10 in the fourth, the Yellow Jackets scored the final 10 points of the game to secure the upset.
Tailback
Jace Grossman had 103 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries to pace the HU offense. Quarterback
Drew Sims was 17-for-33 for 211 yards.
Defensively,
Tyler Turek was credited with a career-high 15 tackles, including a tackle and two tackles for loss. Bennett Roberts also had a career best 12 tackles and a sack.
Heidelberg (3-1, 2-1 OAC) took the opening kickoff and drove down to the BW 10. On 1st and goal, an errant snap sailed over the head of Sims and resulted in a turnover.
On their next drive, however, the Student Princes were able to cash in. Grossman found paydirt from three yards out to give HU the lead.
Branden Steckel added the extra point -- his 60th in a row.
On the ensuing possession, the hosts drove deep into Heidelberg territory. On 1st and goal from the eight yard line, HU's
Tramon Wiley picked off a pass from Keagan Armitage, but the pick was wiped out because of a flag on the 'Berg defense. The Yellow Jackets took advantage of the call and tied the game two plays later.
The two sides traded punts for the remainder of the first half and into the third. Midway through the third, BW's Dean Sarris connected on a 35-yard field goal, giving his side a 10-7 lead.
Heidelberg tied the game on their next possession. An 11-play, 71-yard drive netted a 24-yard field goal by Steckel. The big play on the drive was a 34-yard completion from Sims to
Maceo Matthews Jr. on a 3rd-and-10 from near midfield.
After BW (3-1, 2-1) took the lead on another Sarris field goal, the Yellow Jackets turned a Sims interception into a short touchdown drive.
BW held a near 2:1 advantage in time of possession and outgained the Student Princes 350-282. Yellow Jacket running backs Jon Murray Jr. and Jack Gibbons each eclipsed 100 yards rushing.
The Berg will look to regroup during a bye next week. HU returns to action on October 9 at Marietta (2-1, 2-0). Kickoff along the banks of the Ohio River is slated for 3 p.m.
