GRANVILLE -- The Heidelberg University volleyball team fell in straight sets on the road at Denison University. The Big Red won 25-18, 25-18, 25-11.
The Student Princes slipped to 8-4 on the season while Denison, which received votes in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association Top 25, improved to 8-4.
After trailing by five early in the first set, Heidelberg closed to within one at 16-15 on a kill by
Maddie Szawranskyj. The Big Red regained momentum after three straight HU attack errors allowed the hosts to regain a comfortable cushion. Denison closed the set on a 9-3 run.
The Tricolor started the second on a 5-2 run, but Denison quickly responded and took an 8-6 lead. Later, down 16-12, HU went on a 4-0 run highlighted by a kill from
Shadra Hamsher and two from
Ashley Foster. Once again, the hosts dominated late, capping the second set with a 9-2 swing.
Denison was triumphant in the third set, aided by a 10-0 run that included nine kills and an ace.
On the night, Szawranskyj had a team-high seven kills, followed by
Sadie Estle's six.
Julianna Pena had 13 assists.
Sarah Oney had 15 digs.
The Student Princes return to action on Friday with a varsity/junior varsity doubleheader at Adrian. The varsity match will start first, beginning at 6:30 p.m.
