TIFFIN -- The 2021 season may be over, but the Heidelberg University men's lacrosse team ended the season on a high with a 15-8 victory over Wilmington College. The Berg took a lead in the second quarter and gained momentum in the second half to increase its lead.
The Student Princes honored four graduating seniors before the game who played in Hoernemann Stadium for the final time today.
Heidelberg concludes the 2021 season with a record of 1-11 (1-8 OAC) while the Quakers finish 0-13 (0-9).
Senior
Liam Weaver and freshman
Cian Howery led The Berg with four goals each. Maximilian Hatty also recorded multiple goals with two. Weaver scored the first goal of the game with 13:44 remaining in the first quarter. Three minutes later Wilmington equaled the score, but goals from
Maximillian Hatty and
Michael Stiemly gave The Berg a 3-1 lead. The Quakers netted one more score before the end of the quarter.
Weaver added three more goals in the second quarter, Hatty and Jaydon Scepter also scored in the frame for Heidelberg. Wilmington also scored three in the frame to make the score 9-5 at halftime.
After an early Quakers goal in the third, Howery made his appearance on the scoresheet with a goal three minutes into the quarter, assisted by Weaver. Howery scored again in the final minute of the quarter with an assist from
David Weaver. Heidelberg led 11-6 after three quarters.
Jacob Brickman scored a man-down goal with 9:21 remaining in the contest.
David Weaver also scored before the final Wilmington goal of the game with an assist from Stiemly. Howery scored the final two goals of the game with an assist from
Chris Storrs in the final five minutes of the contest to give Heidelberg the 15-8 win.
Alex Bruder made five saves on his senior day.
Heidelberg out-shot the Quakers 58-32 on the afternoon. The Student Princes also led in ground balls 45-30, and were successful on 18-22 clear attempts.
