TIFFIN -- The Heidelberg University volleyball team earned a sweep of John Carroll University in its final home matchup of the 2020-21 season. The Student Princes took the opener 26-24, 25-22, 25-23 before winning the second match, 25-19, 25-19, 29-27.
Heidelberg improves to 8-8 while the Blue Streaks fall to 5-9.
Maddie Szawranskyj scored 44 kills on the evening, attacking at a .358 clip.
Anamya Truex also had a strong night offensively, registering 16 kills and hitting .350.
The offense ran through
Kelsey Custenborder and
Julianna Pena, who contributed 51 and 35 assists, respectively.
Defensively, 'Berg libero
Sarah Oney recorded 34 digs while freshman
Nicole Thomas added 29. At the net, Truex was a part of nine blocks, while Szawanskyj and
Olivia Hopkins each notched six.
Heidelberg managed to sweep the Blue Streaks in the first match despite struggling with serve receive. John Carroll was credited with nine aces in the opener.
Szawranskyj hit .354 en route to 21 kills in the first match. As a team, Heidelberg hit .205 and held JCU to .090.
Heidelberg won match two with a sweep of the Blue Streaks in three sets. Set three was hotly contested with John Carroll surging late to tie the game at 20. After back and forth points, Heidelberg took the set and the match with a 29-27 win.
Szawranskyj continued her offensive dominance with 23 kills.
Taylor Gimenez attacked at .438 and scored nine kills.
Shadra Hamsher had 10 kills and 12 digs.
The regular season wraps up on Friday as Heidelberg heads to Muskingum for a doubleheader with the conference-leading Muskies. The first match will begin at 6 p.m.
