TIFFIN -- Despite holding a 17-8 edge in shots, the Heidelberg University women's soccer team fell to Mount Union, 1-0, on a mild Monday evening. A breakaway goal in the 62nd minute proved the difference in the match.
Heidelberg dropped to 0-5-2 on the season while Mount Union improved to 2-4-1.
Neither team was able to score in a back-and-forth first half. Heidelberg's
Audrey Kaufman had several good looks, but Mount goalkeeper Claudia Wilson was equal to the task. Late in the period, MTU's Kassity Miller sprang free for a breakaway, but her shot past a diving
Meredith Bruce was left of the frame.
Another breakaway in the 62nd minute did yield a goal by Mount Union. Kaela Turle played a pass which split two 'Berg defenders. Andrea Decker ran onto it and slipped it past Bruce, inside the right post.
With 3:30 to play, Heidelberg nearly found the equalizer when
Makenzie Damsa tracked down a loose ball in the box, then levied a shot on goal. Wilson, though, was well-positioned and made the save.
Bruce, who leads the OAC in saves, tallied four more on the evening.
Kaufman registered five shots on the evening -- all of which were on frame. Wilson had 10 saves in total.
Heidelberg hosts John Carroll on Thursday -- a game that will include the annual Senior Day festivities. The match is slated for a 7 p.m. start.
