ADA, Ohio -- Two days after scoring a combined 31 runs in a doubleheader on Saturday, the Heidelberg University softball team and Ohio Northern combined for a lone run in Ada on Monday. Unfortunately for the Student Princes, the Polar Bears scored the run in the bottom of the sixth and won, 1-0.
Leah Bouillon and
Hanna Blasinsky each had two hits in the loss, the first of the season for Heidelberg (1-1-1).
Riley Cruse (1-1) took the tough-luck loss, despite pitching well. She fanned three in 3.1 innings.
Cruse wriggled out of a bases loaded jam she inherited in the bottom of the second by getting a fly ball to center. She then stranded runners in scoring position in the third and fourth innings, punctuating each frame with a strikeout.
Heidelberg's biggest threat came in the top of the fifth. Bouillon legged out a one-out double to the gap in left center and moved to third on a bunt single by Blasinsky. ONU escaped damage with a strikeout and a ground out to end the inning.
In the bottom of the sixth, Gabby Stewart led off with a double to right center off Cruse. She scored on a double down the right field line off of reliever
Caitlin Dems. Dems was able to hold ONU to the lone tally, however.
Down to the final three outs, The Berg threatened in the seventh. Bouillon hit a one-out single up the middle and was bunted over to second. But ONU's Stacey Walters earned the win by inducing a ground out.
Heidelberg held a slight 7-6 edge in hits, and has out-hit ONU in each of the season's first three games.
The Student Princes face Wilmington for a weekend four-game set. Saturday is in Tiffin, while Sunday is in Wilmington. Game one of each doubleheader is slated to begin at 1 p.m. More details regarding the OAC's limited attendance policy will be announced midweek on BergAthletics.com.
