TIFFIN -- The Heidelberg University softball team snapped a seven-game skid, taking the second half of a Saturday doubleheader at Baldwin Wallace University. BW won the opener, 3-0, before The Berg took the nightcap, 6-1.
The Student Princes (3-9-1, 2-8) got two great starts in the circle as
Caitlin Dems and
Riley Cruse both hurled complete games.
Hanna Blasinsky sped her way to three hits on the day, while
Kat Brady,
Bailee Faulkner and
Shelby Miller all had two hits.
GAME ONE: BW 3 BERG 0
Heidelberg was limited to three hits against potent BW starter Nikki Camarati -- but all three were extra base hits.
Shelby Miller had a double and a triple, while
Bailee Faulkner returned to the lineup and tallied a double. Camarati, however, danced out of trouble each time -- aided by 13 strikeouts in the game.
'Berg starter
Caitlin Dems threw well, allowing just three runs on five hits. BW scored one in the first and two more in the third inning.
GAME TWO: BERG 6 BW 1
Seemingly thrilled to see a pitch not named Nikki Camarati, Heidelberg struck for three runs in the top of the first.
Kat Brady reached on a bunt single and stole second.
Hanna Blasinsky followed with a bunt single, but a throwing error on the play allowed Brady to score. With two outs,
Brooke Lewis doubled home Blasinsky. Faulkner followed with a single that scored Lewis.
Heidelberg added another run in the second inning.
Riley Cruse doubled, moved to third on a Brady bunt single, and scored on a throwing error on a bunt single by Blasinsky.
Ahead 4-1 in the seventh, the Tricolor added a pair of insurance runs.
Emma Dean singled home Blasinsky, who had reached by yet another bunt single. Later in the inning, Lewis plated pinch runner
Brooke Johnson with a sacrifice fly.
Cruse, meanwhile, cruised to a complete game victory. She allowed one run on five hits, striking out seven.
