ALLIANCE, Ohio -- The Heidelberg University baseball team rebounded from a disappointing Saturday by settling for a split on Sunday. The Student Princes beat Mount Union in the opener, 12-6, before giving up the lead late in a 6-4 loss in the nightcap.
Heidelberg's record moved to 4-4 overall, 1-3 in countable OAC contests.
Keaton Mark went 5-for-9 at the plate with two doubles and three runs scored.
Tyler Smith went 4-for-9, scoring twice.
Robert Hunt enjoyed a big day, with a double, a triple, and three RBI to his credit.
The Berg got a pair of strong starts from promising sophomores
Ryan Hackworth and
Jake Hall.
GAME ONE: BERG 12 MTU 6
After allowing two homers in the bottom of the first, HU used two of their own to take a one-run lead in the second. The first homer -- a solo shot to left center -- came off the bat of
Seth Scoville. With two outs,
Tyler Smith singled to center.
Stephen Currie followed with a two-run blast to right center.
Ahead 3-2, Heidelberg tacked on a five-spot in the third.
Zach Doran and
Kyle Jenkins reached via singles.
Marc Ochoa drove in Doran with a single of his own.
Jake Vanek muscled a pitch over the fence in right -- a three-run homer that gave HU a 6-2 advantage.
Still in the second,
Keaton Mark manufactured his own run. He doubled, stole third, and scored on a balk.
Mount Union (5-1, 3-1) got two back in the bottom of the fifth, but Heidelberg responded quickly. In the sixth, Jenkins doubled down the left field line and scored on an RBI single by Ochoa.
The Student Princes added three more in the seventh. Three straight singles to open the inning -- by Mark, Smith and Currie -- plated a run.
Robert Hunt drove in another with a double down the line in right. Jenkins drove in the third run with a sacrifice fly.
'Berg starter
Ryan Hackworth settled in nicely after the homers in the first. He worked seven full innings, allowing five runs (two earned) while striking out eight.
Ridge Clark worked the final two innings, allowing one run.
GAME TWO: MTU 6 BERG 4
Scoreless through five, Heidelberg took the lead in the sixth. Hunt tripled into the right field corner and scored on a ground out by Jenkins.
In the seventh, Mark led off with a double to right center and scored on a double to left by
Reece McNeely. Next, Hunt lifted a sacrifice fly to center that scored Smith.
Down 3-0, Mount Union came to life in the seventh. A two-out grand slam by Eric Schilling put the Purple Raiders on top, 4-3.
After Mount tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the eighth, Heidelberg got the tying run aboard in the ninth.
Aidan Corrigan drew a pinch-hit walk before being lifted for pinch runner
Josiah Aska. Aska moved to second when McNeely was hit by a pitch. With two outs, Hunt singled to center, scoring Aska. The rally ended with a ground out to short.
HU starter
Jake Hall worked 6.1 innings, striking out four.
