Volleyball sweeps Capital, improves to 4-0

TIFFIN -- The Heidelberg University volleyball team picked up sweeps number three and four on the young season, toppling Capital University twice on Tuesday evening.  The wins run Heidelberg's winning streak over the Crusaders to 17, dating back to October 13, 2007.
Heidelberg improved to 4-0 while Capital dropped to 0-6.
Maddie Szawranskyj attacked at a .655 clip, notching 20 kills on 29 swings, leading the 'Berg offense all evening.  Ashley Foster stepped up with 12 kills on 20 attempts.
Rotating through setters early in the season, HU had three players tally 10+ assists on the night.  Kelsey Custenborder had 23, Camryn Hedrick had 15 and Alexis Calhoun had 12.
Defensively, libero Sarah Oney notched 21 digs.  Anamya Truex led the effort at the net with four total blocks.

GAME ONE: HEIDELBERG 3   CAPITAL 0 (25-9, 25-16, 25-20)

The Student Princes made quick work of the Crusaders in the first set.  Maddie Szawranskyj attacked a perfect 5-for-5 to lead HU, which jumped out to a commanding 13-1 advantage.  As a team, The Berg hit .500 and held Capital to -.125.  Liana Petitti did damage with her serves, tallying three aces in the opening set alone.
Szawranskyj added seven more kills in the second set which was closer than the first, but still never seriously in jeopardy.  The Berg, which again got out to a big early lead with a 12-2 run. Capital strung together a 3-0 run, and followed it up with a 4-0 run to close the gap late in the set.
With Head Coach Jason Miller tinkering with the lineup, Heidelberg needed a late surge to complete the game one sweep.  Petitti added three more aces for Heidelberg, which registered nine as a team.
Nicole Thomas had 12 digs and Sarah Oney had 10 … and in a strange statistical anomaly, the pair had the same number of serve receives.

Junior Ashley Foster led the Student Princes in set one with three kills off of three attempts. Capital used a 4-0 run to take an 8-5 lead in the set. Trailing 15-10, The 'Berg rallied a 9-1 run to take the lead back in the set.
