MARIETTA -- The Heidelberg University volleyball team split a pair of matches at Marietta College on Friday. The Student Princes lost the first match and trailed early in the second, but pulled off a comeback win in five sets.
Heidelberg moves to 5-1 while the Pioneers improve to 1-5.
Heidelberg Junior
Maddie Szawranskyj led the Student Princes in kills with 25 on the evening.
Sarah Oney recorded 42 digs as the libero for Heidelberg.
GAME ONE: HEIDELBERG 1 MARIETTA 3 (25-14, 25-18, 25-20, 25-11)
Szawranskyj led HU with 11 kills in the set.
Liana Petitti scored 10 kills and two serving aces in game one.
Oney had 19 digs in the match and Petitti recorded 13.
Kelsey Custenborder led in setting for the Student Princes with 16 assists.
The Pioneers went on a 5-0 run to take a 10-6 lead early in the first set. Undeterred, Heidelberg used a 4-0 run to even the score once again. Not to be outdone at home, Marietta then scored a 9 point run and led over the Student Princes 19-10. With the momentum in their favor, the Pioneers gave Heidelberg its first set loss in the season 25-14.
Heidelberg returned to form in the second set. The 'Berg used two 5-0 runs to win the set 25-18. Szawranskyj,
Taylor Gimenez, and
Anamya Truex each recorded three kills in the set.
With the score tied, Marietta went on a 5-0 run to take a 17-12 lead in set three. The Student Princes tried to rally late in the set, but ultimately fell 25-20. Szawranskyj recorded four more kills and Petitti scored three for The 'Berg.
The Pioneers started off with a 6-1 run in set four. The first time The 'Berg has gone to a fourth set this season resulted in a 25-11 loss.
Ashley Foster led the Student Princes in the set with two kills.
GAME TWO: HEIDELBERG 3 MARIETTA 2 (25-20, 25-16, 25-20, 25-17, 15-13)
Szawranskyj led The Student Princes offensively in the second game with 14 kills.
Nicole Thomas scored three serving aces.
Oney recorded 23 digs in game two.
Camryn Hedrick led the Student Princes in assists with 26.
Marietta began the first set with an 8-3 run. The Pioneers weathered a late 4 point run by The 'Berg to hold onto the win in the set. Szawranskyj recorded five kills in the set and Gimenez scored three kills for the Student Princes.
Leading 11-9, Marietta scored an 11-3 run to lead the Student Princes late in the set.
Shadra Hamsher led Heidelberg in the set with four kills.
Heidelberg began set three with an 8-0 run. Heidelberg scored 15 kills in the set with Foster leading the way with four.
Trailing 7-5, Heidelberg scored a 5-0 run to take its first lead of the set. As Marietta tried to recover, the Student Princes had a six point run to take a 19-12 lead. The visitors maintained their lead to force a fifth set in game two.
The Student Princes trailed 13-11 in the final set, but a 4-0 run kicked off by a kill from Petitti lifted Heidelberg to a win.
