TIFFIN -- The Heidelberg University volleyball team made its long-awaited debut on Friday, scoring a pair of wins over Wilmington College. Heidelberg swept both halves of the two-game set in front of a small, but enthusiastic crowd.
The Student Princes got key contributions from many familiar faces, and lots of new ones.
Junior
Maddie Szawranskyj totalled a team-high 22 kills on the day, attacking at a .354 clip. Freshmen
Lexi Evak (15 kills and five blocks) and
Anamya Truex (nine kills, .533 attack) were sharp in their debut. Sophomore
Liana Petitti emerged as a threat with 10 kills and three aces.
Defensively, junior libero
Sarah Oney had 33 digs and was a perfect 19-of-19 on serve receives. Freshman
Nicole Thomas was impressive in her collegiate debut, amassing 19 digs and 18 serve receives.
GAME ONE: HEIDELBERG 3 WILMINGTON 0 (25-13, 25-17, 25-19)
Trailing 12-11 in the first set, Heidelberg went on a 12-point run to lead 23-12. Petitti handled serving duties on the run. The Student Princes would go on to win the set 25-13.
Heidelberg took an early 4-0 lead in the second set. The Quakers battled back and tied the set at 7. A 4-0 run from Heidelberg gave the home team a 17-12 lead. Heidelberg had another 4-0 run late in the set which gave the Student Princes a 23-16 lead. The 'Berg closed out the set with a score of 25-17, punctuated by an ace from Barman..
Heidelberg began the third set with Thomas serving and came out flying.. The Student Princes went on a 12-3 run to open the frame. Later, down 23-9, Wilmington strung together an eight-point run to trail by just seven points. However, the effort fell short with Heidelberg taking set three 25-19 and winning the first match of the evening 3-0.
GAME TWO: HEIDELBERG 3 WILMINGTON 0 (25-14, 25-17, 25-22)
Heidelberg scored a 10-0 run early in the first set to take a 12-4 lead. Oney recorded an ace as Heidelberg made four kills in the run. The Student Princes closed the set on a 7-2 run, with an ace from
Camryn Hedrick scoring the final point for The 'Berg.
The second set started with a 15-5 run for the Tricolor. Heidelberg recorded eight kills in the outburst, including aces from
Ashley Foster and Barman. Neither team could find momentum through the rest of the set and the teams traded points. An attack error by Wilmington gave the Student Princes a 25-17 win in the frame.
Wilmington's best effort of the day came in the final set. The Quakers got out to a 4-0 lead early and led 11-6 midway through the stanza. The momentum toggled back and forth for the rest of the set, first with a 5-0 charge by Heidelberg. Two kills and a 'Berg error put the Quakers back on top 14-11. Three Quaker miscues tied the match at 14, but the visitors would once again go on a run. A 7-3 run gave WC a 21-17 advantage.
Szawranskyj came off the bench and lit a fire for the Tricolor. HU regrouped and won the next five points, taking a 22-21 lead. After a service error tied the game at 22, HU waltzed away with the next three points and the sweep.

With the sweeps, Heidelberg remains unbeaten against the Quakers, winning all 27 matches. The last 12 have been sweeps.
