Cold third quarter hurts Berg in loss

TIFFIN -- The Heidelberg University women's basketball team dropped its third-straight contest, falling to Ohio Northern University on Saturday evening. Freshman Kalie Rettos had 16 points in the 87-59 loss.

Rettos was one of three players in double figures for Heidelberg. Brooke Beamer and Bailey Walter each contributed 11 points. Beamer also added a game-high eight rebounds and two blocked shots.

Hannah Kilps had a season-high six assists.

With two minutes left in an evenly-played first quarter, Clara Smith hit a 3-pointer from the right side. The triple cut ONU's lead to 15-12. However, the visitors closed the frame on a 5-0 run and took a 20-13 lead.

Down nine in the second quarter, Rettos hit a triple and Beamer scored on a fast-break layup off a steal by Alyssa Martin. The 5-0 run prompted a timeout from the Polar Bear bench. The respite proved effective as ONU rattled off the next seven points to push their lead out to 11.

Undaunted, the Student Princes responded with back-to-back 3-pointers by Beamer and Rettos to creep back within five with 3:21 to play in the half. Unfortunately for the Tricolor, ONU ended the half on an 8-0 and took a 13-point cushion into halftime.

In the third, ONU took total control of the game by finding a lot of open looks at the basket. The visitors hit 10-12 from the field, scoring 16 of their 26 3rd-quarter points in the paint. Conversely, HU was 5-17 from the floor, 1-6 from beyond the arc. As a result, ONU led 66-42.

Heidelberg was unable to rally in the fourth quarter.

The Polar Bears were led by 19-point night from Alissa Stahler off the bench.

Despite the high-pressure defense from the Student Princes, ONU had just nine turnovers. The Berg, however, held a 40-36 edge in rebounds.

Heidelberg (1-5) begins the second half of the truncated season with a home-and-home series next weekend with Mount Union (2-4). The Student Princes host on Friday, while the Purple Raiders host on Saturday.
