WILMINGTON, Ohio -- Despite scoring a season-high 82 points, the Heidelberg University women's basketball team fell in their final regular season road contest, 98-82, at Wilmington College on Saturday. The Student Princes had four players reach double-figures in the loss.
Heidelberg dropped to 1-10 on the season while the Quakers improved to 5-6.
Freshman
Karlee Mills scored 21 points, a career high, bolstered by going 11-12 at the line.
Sophomore
Bailey Walter also did damage at the stripe, hitting 7-8 to finish with 13 points. Walter added 12 rebounds, notching her second double-double of the season.
Seniors
Lauryn VanHoose and
Brooke Beamer each finished with 12 points.
A slow first quarter sank HU's hopes of picking up the upset on the road.
A 6-2 run over the opening three minutes gave the Quakers an early lead. Wilmington then went on a 9-0 run, spanning two minutes to take a 15-4 lead with 4:49 remaining in the first quarter.
Wilmington made 9-17(52.9%) of field goals in the first quarter, compared to 4-14(28.6%) from Heidelberg, the Quakers led at the end of 10 minutes 24-11.
A 12-4 run from Heidelberg to start the second quarter brought the score to 28-23 with 7:13 remaining in the second frame.
Alyssa Martin had four points in the run and
Taylor Reppart contributed a 3-pointer.
The Quakers then went 12-0 to take a 40-23 lead over The 'Berg in the following three minutes.
Heidelberg had a late-quarter resurgence, with an 11-3 run in the final three minutes of the half. The Student Princes led the half in scoring 27-25 but trailed at halftime 49-38. The Student Princes shot 10-18(55.6%) and 2-6(33%) in the quarter.
Heidelberg put together a 12-6 run in the third quarter to bring the score to 71-60 with one minute remaining in the quarter. Heidelberg maintained its strong shooting performance from the second quarter with 46.2% from the floor and 100% from the free throw line.
Wilmington started the final frame with a 12-2 run through the opening four minutes. Haley Cook led the run for the Quakers with six points. Heidelberg responded with a 10-1 run to bring the score to 90-74 with 3:25 remaining in the game.
The Student Princes could not stop the twins of Hannah and McKayla Binkley, the duo scored 51 points and collected 12 rebounds on their senior night.
Heidelberg will get a rematch with the Quakers tomorrow night at home for the final game of the regular season. The six seniors on the Heidelberg lineup will be honored before the game for their last game in Seiberling Gymnasium. Tipoff is slated for 6 p.m.
