Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Second half slump spells doom in opener

TIFFIN -- The Heidelberg University women's lacrosse team kicked off the spring slate with a 14-7 loss to visiting Marietta College on Sunday.  Tied at half, Marietta controlled the second half en route to the victory.

Heidelberg has multi-goal games from senior Angela Lulejian and freshman Aries Barnes, both of whom tallied two goals on the afternoon.

Half of Marietta's goals came on free position shots -- including the first two goals of the game by Mackenzie Dyott.

The Student Princes got on the board seven minutes into the match when grad student Dana Dudley powered her way in front of the crease and beat Marietta goalie Maddie Leers.

Down 3-1, Lulejian tallied her first goal off a pass from Brianna Lloyd with 16:06 to play in the first half.

Lulejian's second goal came five minutes later -- an unassisted tally that brought the Tricolor back with a goal at 4-3.  For her career, Lulejian now has 99 goals.

Just over a minute later, Macy Zachary knotted the game up at four with her first goal of the season.

Though Marietta scored the next two goals, Heidelberg closed the half with momentum.  Barnes scored her first collegiate goal with 3:24 left in the game.  Then, just before halftime, Kelly Spence tied the game with her first goal of the year.

Tied at six, the Pioneers reeled off the first six goals of the half to take control of the game.  The lone 'Berg marker of the period came from Barnes midway through.

Shots, ground balls, saves, draw controls, and turnovers were all fairly even between the two sides.  The big statistical discrepancies came in clear attempts and fouls.  Marietta was successful on 19-22 (86.3%) while Heidelberg was 14-24 (58.3%).  HU was whistled for 24 infractions, while the Pioneers registered nine.

Mandi Phillips made 11 saves in the loss, while Leers finished with 15.

The loss came in the debut of Heidelberg Head Coach Becky Smith.

Heidelberg hits the road on Wednesday, traveling to John Carroll University for a 7 p.m. match with the Blue Streaks.
