Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

The stars align for a big win

Women's Basketball beats Wilmington

TIFFIN, Ohio -- The stars aligned for the Heidelberg University women's basketball team (2-7, 1-2 OAC), with contributions from the whole team. A fast and aggressive game against Wilmington College (4-5, 1-3 OAC) on Saturday afternoon resulted in a big win for the 'Berg.

The team was led by Bailey Walter, who managed another double-double (16pts, 10 rebounds) -- the second of the season and sixth of her career. Lily Sweeney followed suit by contributing 12 points and Hallie Rogers with seven points.  Ashley Ballard and Alyssa Martin were big in the paint with seven rebounds apiece.

In the first minute, Lily Sweeney hit a corner 3-pointer off a pass from Ballard. Wilmington struggled with turnovers, leading 5-1 just three minutes into the quarter. Bailey Walter created some energy after two back to back jumpers, spreading the lead to six.

The Fighting Quakers fought a little too hard, drawing six fouls and putting the Berg in the bonus for the last two minutes. Heidelberg led 23-17 going into the second quarter.

Walter earned the first points of the second quarter after finding her own rebound and put back, racking up eight points total.

In the seventh minute, Marissa Thomas took a strong drive for two more. She followed it up with a steal, and assisted Lily Sweeney for a 3-pointer.

Elisha Carter created a big wave of confidence by stopping a fast break with three minutes left, giving the ball back to Heidelberg. They finished out the quarter with a bank shot by Alyssa Martin, off a sneaky dish pass from Hallie Rogers.

The Tricolor hit the locker room up by 14, their largest halftime lead of the season.

Heidelberg kept their lead for the third quarter, but struggled to hold back the Quaker's defense. Wilmington capitalized on Heidelberg's six turnovers and found four steals, outscoring the 'Berg 13-12.

Sweeney caught everyone's attention with back to back 3-pointers in the first three minutes -- shooting 4-6 from the arc on the day.

After a series of turnovers and shot attempts from both teams the quarter dwindled down.
Walter finished it out adding two more points with 13 seconds left, 50-37.

Wilmington made a strong comeback effort in the fourth, narrowing the lead to five points, with just 41 seconds left. The Quakers sent Heidelberg to the line for 16 shots in the quarter --16-26 in total, helping secure the win.

Heidelberg dominated the boards 46-31 with help from the whole team.

Heidelberg will take the court again next Saturday in another double header, at Muskingum.
The women's game will start at 2 p.m.
