TIFFIN -- There was plenty to cheer about in the Heidelberg University men's basketball team's 31-point win over Wilmington College -- their biggest win over the Quakers in school history. But the biggest reaction from the 'Berg faithful inside Seiberling Gymnasium may have been Head Coach
Andy Bucheit's decision to sub out freshman guard
Isaiah Young with 2:57 remaining.
The crown playfully booed as Young jogged to the bench with a career-high 27 points on 10-of-11 shooting. The Akron native was 3-for-4 from beyond the arc and 4-for-4 at the line -- all in 17 minutes of playing time off the bench.
Young and the Student Princes beat Wilmington, 97-66, and improved to 8-1 (3-0 OAC) on the season.
Tre Watkins added 14 points while
Eric Panning and
Dylan Woods each contributed 13 in the resounding victory.
Emmanuel Perdue had nine points and a game-high nine rebounds.
The Student Princes were hot from the start, building a nine-point in the first five minutes of the game. The hosts shot 60% from the floor and were 6-for-9 from long range in the first half. Panning finished the period with 11 points and Watkins had 10 points as HU built a lead as big as 18.
Heidelberg led 41-29 at the break
Young, who had five points in the first half, caught fire after halftime. One 62-second stretch early in the second half, may cause a few gray hairs around the region for opposing coaches watching film. Young grabbed a defensive rebound and converted it into a fast-break layup driving to his right. On the next trip down, Woods hit Young for a 3-pointer in transition from the right wing. Then, after another stop. Young drove to his left down the baseline and laid the ball off the glass and in. The 6-0 spurt elicited a timeout from the Quakers and delighted the 'Berg fans.
Down by 20, Wilmington (2-6, 0-3) got to within 15 points with eight minutes remaining, but Heidelberg maintained its momentum throughout the period.
The Student Princes shot a blistering 36-for-61 from the floor (59.0%) en route to the 31-point win. In more than 100 years, Heidelberg has never had a single season with two 30+ point wins until now.
Prior to Saturday, Heidelberg's biggest win against the Quakers was an 87-63 win in 2004.
Woods, now with 1,021 career points, moved past Rich "Big Daddy" Langford (1987-91) for 29th all-time.
The Student Princes will return to action next Saturday as part of an OAC doubleheader at Muskingum. The men's game is slated for a 4 p.m. start, after the conclusion of the women's game.
