Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

WBB tripped up by BW

TIFFIN -- If the Heidelberg University women's basketball team's game against visiting Baldwin Wallace was a sandwich, the peanut butter and the jelly would have been great, but the bread would have been a bit stale.  The Student Princes outplayed the Yellow Jackets in the second and third quarter, but a rough first and fourth quarter ultimately undid HU's hopes of a victory in the OAC opener.  BW emerged with a 73-49 win.

Heidelberg (1-6, 0-1 OAC) was led by a career-high 10 points from Marissa Thomas.  Lily Sweeney added nine points.

Baldwin Wallace (4-1, 1-0 OAC) took control early and led 23-11 after the first period.  Their lead blossomed to as much as 18 in the second before The Berg found its footing.

HU went on a 14-6 run over the final seven minutes of the second -- with half of the points coming from Thomas.  The Student Princes trailed 35-25 at halftime.

In the third, the Yellow Jackets went on the offensive once again, building up a 20-point cushion. Undaunted, the young 'Berg squad clawed back into the contest.  Over the final six minutes of the frame, HU outscored BW 18-6.  The run featured six Heidelberg scorers, including five from Taylor Ratliff.  The Student Princes ended the period with an eight-point deficit, 52-44.

The hosts went cold in the fourth quarter, shooting 1-for-15 from the floor.  Baldwin Wallace, however, dialed up a 9-for-14 performance in the final stanza.

The Yellow Jackets were led by double-doubles by Lilly Edwards (18 points, 10 rebounds) and Megan Hensel (15 points, 10 rebounds).  Hensel and Edwards were among four in double figures for BW.

Heidelberg held a slim 36-34 edge in rebounding.

The Berg is back in action at Mount Union on Saturday.  The game time was been moved to a 4 p.m. start in Alliance.
