TIFFIN -- The Heidelberg University men's basketball team fell from the ranks of the unbeaten on Saturday after an 81-72 loss to Ohio Wesleyan University. The Battling Bishops were dialed in from long range right from the start, hitting on 11 of 24 attempts. Meanwhile, the Student Princes struggled from behind the arc, going 4-for-21.
Heidelberg dropped to 4-1 on the season while OWU improved to 3-2.
Isaiah Young had 20 points off the bench on an efficient 10-of-15 shooting.
Dylan Woods had 19 points, aided by three 3-pointers.
Eric Panning tallied his first career double-double, finishing with 13 points and 11 rebounds.
Trailing by one with 11:30 left in the first half, OWU hit three 3-pointers as part of a 10-0 run. Down nine with 4:40 left, HU's
Zane Leitwein hit a triple before Young knifed through the Ohio Wesleyan defense on three straight possessions. He hit three layups, tying the game at 36 with 2:16 remaining in the half.
OWU led 41-36 at the break.
Down four midway through the second half, HU went on another 9-0 run to take a five-point lead -- their biggest of the contest. The run -- which included two layups by Young and a 3-pointer from Woods -- was punctuated by a dunk from Panning.
OWU's Nick Carlson had success in the post and scored six in a row, helping the visitors rebuild their lead to seven with 4:01 left. Heidelberg would cut their deficit to as little as two, but were unable to regain the lead.
The Battling Bishops were led by Henry Hinkle's 22 points and seven assists. Jack Clement had 20 points -- 16 of which came in the first half.
The Student Princes held a 6-0 edge in blocked shots.
Heidelberg dips into OAC action on Wednesday at Baldwin Wallace (4-0). Tipoff in Berea is slated for 7 p.m.
