Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Volleyball orbits past Comets

BEXLEY, Ohio --  The Heidelberg University volleyball team won its third straight match, dispatching host Capital University with a sweep. HU won 25-22, 25-27, 25-22.

Heidelberg moved to 12-5 overall, 2-0 in the Ohio Athletic Conference.  The Comets dropped to 3-9, 0-3.

Maddie Szawranskyj and Anamya Truex both reached double digits in kills. Szawranskyj tallied 15 and Truex notched 13.  Truex's baker's dozen came on just 23 swings.  Sadie Estle and Liana Petitti both finished with nine kills.

Kelsey Custenborder registered 23 assists and Julianna Pena had 18.

Defensively, libero Sarah Oney picked up a whopping 33 digs in the three-set victory -- an average of 11 per set.

In the first set, Heidelberg dashed out to a comfortable lead and led 20-13.  The Comets rattled off five straight points to crawl back into the set, but kills by Petitti and Truex helped HU regain momentum.  Szawranskyj capped the opening set with back-to-back kills.

Heidelberg led 17-7 in the second, which allowed them to withstand another 5-0 swing by the Comets.  The Tricolor responded with a 4-0 run of their own, highlighted by another set of back-to-back kills from Szawranskyj.

Capital had their best shot in the third.  They watched an 11-8 advantage evaporate with a 6-0 'Berg run that included three kills by Estle.  Undeterred, the Comets fought back and tied the set at 19.  Ahead 23-22, Heidelberg took the final two points with kills from Estle to seal the win.

The win was Heidelberg's 17th consecutive win over Capital -- a stretch that dates back to 2007.

Heidelberg returns to action on Saturday.  HU will host Marietta and Case Western Reserve in a tri-match that will also mark the annual No One Fights Alone fundraiser.  Admission for all three games is free, but donations will be accepted at the door.  The proceeds will benefit FACT (Financial Assistance for Cancer Treatment) of Seneca County.  Heidelberg and Marietta square off at 1 p.m.
