TIFFIN -- The Heidelberg University volleyball team won twice on Saturday as part of the No One Fights Alone trimatch. The Student Princes swept Marietta in a conference matchup, then beat Case Western Reserve, 3-1. The victories stretched HU's win streak to five.
Heidelberg improved to 14-5 overall, 3-0 in the OAC.
For the day,
Liana Petitti paced the offense with 26 kills, hitting .262.
Maddie Szawranskyj was close behind with 25 kills and seven aces.
Kelsey Custenborder accumulated 48 assists and
Julianna Pena notched 41.
Sarah Oney picked up 43 digs, averaging 6.14 per set. Petitti had 22 and
Nicole Thomas had 19.
Heidelberg swept the Pioneers, 25-17, 25-18, 25-18, attacking .302 as a team.
The Berg got behind early, but righted the ship quickly in the first set. Down 12-9, HU scored nine of the next 11 points to take control of the set.
Four aces from Szawranskyj helped HU storm out to a 7-0 lead in the second set -- a lead it would easily hang on to.
The third set featured six tie scores and a pair of lead changes. The Pioneers (3-13, 0-3) got to within one at 18-17 before HU embarked on a 6-0 run. Sadie Eslte capped the match with a kill, one of 18 she tallied on the afternoon.
After Case Western Reserve outlasted Marietta in the middle game, 3-2, the Spartans and Student Princes squared off. Heidelberg won the match 25-18, 23-25, 25-23, 25-21.
In the first set, The Berg enjoyed a 17-10 lead before the visitors crept back into the match with an 8-3 run.
Anamya Truex helped HU regain momentum with back-to-back kills as HU took the final five points.
Heidelberg gave away a 6-1 lead in the second set, allowing the Spartans to get back into the match. CWRU used a 5-0 run to take a 15-12 lead. HU briefly retook the lead at 18-17, but Case regrouped and took the set.
The Spartans (8-9) led the third set 16-12, but HU tied the match with four straight points. From there, the squads alternated points all the way to 21-21. Later, tied at 23, HU won the set with kills by Petitti and
Taylor Gimenez.
Looking to close the match out, HU built up a 17-12 cushion. Each time the Spartans appeared poised for a comeback, HU responded.
Ashley Foster put the exclamation mark on the win with a kill.
Heidelberg returns to action on Wednesday at home. They'll host Baldwin Wallace, with first serve slated for 7 p.m.
