TIFFIN, Ohio -- Missed opportunities early proved costly as the Heidelberg University men's soccer team lost to the Capital Comets, 3-0, on Wednesday. The Student Princes had four great opportunities to score the game's first goal, but came up empty each time. Instead, the Comets scored early in the second half, then iced the game with two late goals.
The Student Princes dropped to 4-6-1 overall, 0-1-1 in the OAC. Capital improved to 7-3, 2-0.
Heidelberg had a good look in the 11th minute.
Simon Joseph ran onto a through-ball down the left side. Comets goalkeeper Brady Frydl came off his line and made a sliding save near the edge of the penalty area.
In the 32nd minute,
Obed Aidoo had a great opportunity to score the game's first goal on a counterattack. Slipping in behind the Comets back line, Aidoo pushed the ball just wide.
Ten minutes later,
Ilyes Bouguetof delivered a perfect cross into the six where it found a wide-open
Isaac Wienen. Wienen's redirect narrowly dipped over the crossbar.
Capital outshot Heidelberg in the scoreless first half, 7-4 -- but possession was even at 50%.
Less than five minutes into the second half, it was
Hussein Faraj's turn to miss out on a golden opportunity to break the 0-0 tie. A loose ball in the penalty area found the foot of Faraj, who missed to the left side of the frame.
For all their opportunities, the Student Princes found themselves trailing in the 56th minute. A handball in the box gave the Comets a penalty kick. Jack Francisco banked the ball in off the right post, tallying his fifth goal of the season.
In the 83rd, a Sam Spirk header beat
Sigurd Ilestad, doubling the size of the Comets lead. Less than a minute later, Jack Kossoudji made it a 3-0 lead for the visitors, finishing a long run that began in the midfield area. He slid a shot to the far post, past a diving Ilestad.
For the match, Capital outshot Heidelberg, 12-8. Ilestad had four saves, Frydl made three.
Heidelberg is back in action on Saturday. The Student Princes visit Marietta College for a 7 p.m. contest along the banks of the Ohio River.
