Box Score MARIETTA – The Heidelberg University men's soccer team battled to a 2-2 draw on Saturday night at Marietta College. The Student Princes held a 2-1 lead in the second half, but a late equalizer by the host Pioneers held up through overtime as the two sides settled for a tie.
HU moves to 4-6-2 (0-1-2 Ohio Athletic Conference) while Marietta moves to 4-5-2 (1-1-1 OAC).
The scoring opened in the 19th minute then the Pioneers earned a penalty kick, which was converted to give the hosts a 1-0 lead. Heidelberg held a 5-4 edge in shots and 4-1 in corner kicks in the first half, but were unable to break through as they trailed entering the half.
Early in the second half, the Berg offense was able to knot up the score at one when
Timothy Zack scored his first goal of the season in the 51st minute.
Less than 5 minutes later, HU earned a penalty kick of their own, which was converted when
Obed Aidoo beat the keeper, giving the Student Princes a 2-1 lead.
That advantage for the Berg held up for some time until the 74th minute when Marietta netted the equalizer.
The Pioneers had a few shots on goal down the stretch, but
Sigurd Ilestad was able to make the saves necessary to send the match into overtime.
Neither side was able to generate much offense in the overtime periods, as just 3 shots were registered, two by the Berg and one by Marietta. That resulted in the match ending in a 2-2 draw following the overtime periods.
Rafael Bellucci led HU with three shots, including one on goal while Ilestad made three saves in goal.
Heidelberg will be back on the pitch on Wednesday when they travel to Baldwin Wallace for another OAC contest. That match is scheduled to begin at 7:00 PM in Berea.
