Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

VB jumps into OAC action with win

WILMINGTON, Ohio -- After a disappointing loss on Wednesday, the Heidelberg University volleyball team rebounded with a pair of 3-1 wins in a tri-match on Saturday.  The Student Princes beat Wilmington (18-25, 25-18, 25-23, 25-16) in the opener, then defeated Adrian (25-19, 25-16, 22-25, 25-14) in the middle match.

Heidelberg improved to 11-5 overall, 1-0 in the OAC.

Maddie Szawranskyj compiled 35 kills on the afternoon -- with 23 in the Adrian match alone. The senior added 20 digs and nine aces to round out her strong performance.

Liana Petitti added 26 kills, 15 digs and three blocks.  Anamya Truex and Sadie Estle each contributed 14 kills on the day, adding three and five blocks, respectively.

Setters Julianna Pena and Kelsey Custenborder each notched 41 assists.

Libero Sarah Oney averaged 6.5 digs per set and finished with 52 in total.  Nicole Thomas had 18 digs and Jeylo Hernandez Rodriguez chipped in with 11.

HEIDELBERG 3   WILMINGTON 1

To say the Student Princes came out sluggish in the opening set of the day would be an epic understatement.  The Quakers rattled off the first 10 points of the day -- a streak that only stopped because of a service error. The shellshocked Student Princes would get no closer than six points in the set.

The second set seemed to be a carbon copy of the first, with the Quakers -- led by former HU assistant Sophie Windover -- taking the first four points.  The Berg regrouped and later tied the match at 5.  With the score knotted at 11, Heidelberg scored the next six points -- four coming on aces by Szawranskyj.  The momentum from the run carried the Tricolor to a win.

With the third set tied at 20, the two teams traded points until a Quaker kill made it 23-23.  A Wilmington service error proved costly, giving a set-point opportunity to HU.  Szawranskyj cashed in with an ace to win the set.

In the fourth, HU quickly took a 7-2 lead en route to a 14-5 cushion.  Though dejected, the Quakers managed to fend off four game-point chances for HU.  In the end, it was an emphatic kill from the middle by Estle that sealed the win.

Heidelberg improved to 28-0 all-time against the Quakers.

HEIDELBERG 3   ADRIAN 1

Eight days after a 3-2 'Berg win -- in which HU trailed 2-0 -- in Adrian, the Student Princes and Bulldogs reunited for an encore.  A 9-3 run midway through the first set was enough to lift HU to a win.

A 10-4 run in the second set keyed another win for HU, but Adrian staved off defeat with a narrow win in the third.

Down 7-6 in the fourth, HU embarked on a 7-0 run that came as part of a larger 14-4 run.  That was enough to propel the Student Princes to victory. The win was capped by a block from Grace Porter and Shadra Hamsher.
