TIFFIN, Ohio-- After double overtime, the Heidelberg University men's soccer team couldn'tÂ
out-fight the Fightin' Quakers. Instead, The Berg and Wilmington ended with a grueling 1-1 draw in the Ohio Athletic Conference opener for both squads.
The Student Princes move to 4-5-1 on the season. Meanwhile, the Quakers add their second tie of the year making them 7-0-2.
A slow-paced first half, with neither team scoring, took them into the break 0-0. Both teams were neck-and-neck with the Quakers taking seven shots, and the Berg striking six times.
Seven minutes into the second half,
Sigurd Ilestad made the save of the season. Â Diving to his right, the senior knocked down a penalty kick off the foot of Ryan Forino. Ilestad jumped to his feet and pounced on the rebound while his teammates erupted in joy.Â
Moments later, though, the Quakers got on the board with a goal by Brady Shapiro. Taking a cross from Grant Murray, Shapiro jostled through a crowded penalty area and snuck a shot past Ilestad. Â
With 15 minutes left on the clock, the Student Princes remained behind by a goal. A cross from the left side found
Hussein Faraj who tipped it to Rafael Belluci Marin for the equalizer, which would end up being the final goal of the day.
Heidelberg finished the game with a total of five shots on goal.
The 1-1 draw is a much different result than the 5-0 drubbing Wilmington laid on the Student Princes last spring. Â
Heidelberg's next battle will be another home game on Wednesday. A matchup against the newly-renamed Capital Comets will start at 4 p.m. at the Hidden Valley Soccer Complex. Â Â Â
