Berea, OH - The Heidelberg University men's soccer team stunned the Baldwin Wallace University Yellow Jackets, 1-0, in a double overtime thriller on Wednesday night.
After struggling in the attacking third all match, it took one brilliant kick from junior
Ethan White to earn the Student Princes their first Ohio Athletic Conference victory of the 2021 campaign.
In the 108th minute, the Buckingham, England native laced a half-volley from 25 yards out that sailed over an outstretched Matt Weaver in the BW net and fell for the match-winning goal. The goal marks the first score of White's career, and it couldn't have come at a better time for the Berg.
The Student Princes improve to 5-6-2 overall and 1-1-2 in the OAC, while BW slides to 6-8-1, winless (0-4-0) against OAC competition.
Both sides struggled offensively in the opening half, with each keeper facing only two shots on goal en route to a scoreless first half.
The Heidelberg attack sputtered in the second half, tallying just one shot on goal. The Yellow Jackets challenged Berg keeper
Sigurd Ilestad throughout the frame with five shots on goal but the Sem, Norway native was equal to the task.
Late in the match frustrations turned into bookings as three yellow cards were issued in the opening 10 minutes of extra time.
Ilestad nearly let the match slip through his gloves as a long BW attempt fell through his hands, deflected off of the right goal post and was luckily scooped up by the senior netminder. The Norwegian finished with nine saves against the Jackets lifting his season total to 57. The clean sheet performance marks his third shutout of the year.
The Yellow Jackets swarmed the Berg penalty area in the first period of extra time. Ilestad had to make a reflex save and knock a hard shot over the crossbar to keep the match locked at 0-0 with less than two minute left in the first overtime.
Baldwin Wallace created an abundance of opportunities in extra time, while the Berg struggled to break into the attacking third. Ilestad's stellar performance between the posts kept the match scoreless and forced a second period.
As the end drew near, an untimely BW turnover at midfield led to a quick counter for the Student Princes. Crisp passing from the Berg backline led to
Rafael Bellucci Marin locating White in space and the Buckingham native blasted a shot over a leaping Weaver to conclude the battle in Berea.
The Student Princes return to action on Saturday as they host the Otterbein University Cardinals. Due to the weather forecast, the match has been moved to 12 p.m. at Hoernemann Stadium.
