Shutout sweep caps off 2020 season

CLERMONT, Florida -- The 2020 installment of the annual spring break trip to Florida came to a close on Saturday afternoon with two joyful shutout victories.

The joy was short lived however.

As Shelby Miller fielded a ground ball and threw over to Casey Moore for the final out of a 5-0 win over Bridgewater State, initial reactions of excitement suddenly halted as the team remembered their season had come to a premature close due to the Ohio Athletic Conference's decision to cancel the rest of the athletic calendar in light of the COVID-19 pandemic.

After taking two games in shutout fashion -- a 2-0 win over Nichols and a 5-0 victory over BSU -- Heidelberg concludes their 2020 season with a 9-3 record at the forefront of what was shaping up to be a much improved season.

Starting pitchers Stephanie Drapp and Kaitlyn Moore once again showed up in the circle and dominated their performances. In game one, Drapp threw seven innings and conceded just two hits and two walks while striking out two Bison hitters. In game two, Moore tossed her second one-hit shutout of the season. In seven innings pitched, Moore allowed just one hit and struck out seven.

On the day offensively, Leah Bouillon led the Student Princes' offense with a 4-for-5 showing at the plate that also included a walk and a run scored. Kaitlyn Moore put together a quality 3-for-6 day at the plate that featured a two-run home run in game one, and a two RBI single in game two. Moore also walked once and scored a run.

HEIDELBERG - 2   NICHOLS - 0
Game one cruised into the fifth inning as both teams had just one hit a piece through four and half innings played. During the bottom of the fifth, HU threatened. Leah Bouillon and Hanna Blasinsky led off the inning with back-to-back singles and moved ahead on a sac bunt from Shelby Miller. Then Casey Moore walked to load the bases, but unfortunately The Berg stranded the trio on base, ending the inning.

Drapp worked a quick 1-2-3 inning in the top of the sixth frame, and then led off the bottom half with a single to left center. After pinch runner Halie Monhollen took over for Drapp, Kaitlyn Moore stepped to the plate and delivered a two-run home run over the fence in left center to give Heidelberg the crucial lead.

In the seventh, Drapp (5-1) surrendered a lead off double, but slammed the door shut as she induced a ground out and a double play to end the game 2-0 in favor of the Student Princes.

Alexis Ferris (0-2) tossed all six innings and was credited with the loss. Ferris conceded two earned runs, four walks and struck out just one.

HEIDELBERG - 5   BRIDGEWATER STATE - 0
Much like game one, the second game moved right along as the scoreless deadlock held strong into the seventh inning.

In the top of the seventh, HU batted around and plated five unearned runs to prove they wanted to close the season on a high.

Delaney Gill led off the inning with a single to right before Bouillon and Blasinsky both reached on errors to load the bases. Shelby Miller then drove home Gill with a patiently drawn walk. Then, with the bags still loaded, Bethany Redman flew out to left, which allowed Bouillon to beat the tag home. Casey Moore then reached base on a fielder's choice to load the bases once more. This time, Kaitlyn Moore delivered once again, helping her own cause with a two-run single up the middle that scored Blasinsky and pinch runner Meghan Bame. The inning's scoring concluded with an RBI infield single from Kennedy Conney to plate the fifth run.

Kaitlyn Moore (4-2) then worked a 1-2-3 bottom of the seventh to close out, not only the game and season, but her illustrious HU career as well. Moore -- who had previously thrown a one-hit shutout vs. DeSales earlier this week -- conceded her lone hit of the afternoon in the third inning on a single to left field from Jenny Heller.

Laura Hatch (1-4) was strapped with the loss as her 4.2 innings of relief conceded six hits and five unearned runs. Hatch walked one and struck out three Student Princes.

INSIDE THE BOX:
Kaitlyn Moore finishes her career among the top of several HU records in program history. Pitching, Moore is the career leader in strikeouts (321), third in wins (34), fourth in innings pitched (381.1), and seventh in complete games (35). Offensively, Moore is tied for seventh in home runs (16) -- just one shy of her sister Casey's 17.

With eight RBIs this season, Casey Moore moves to seventh in career RBIs with 84. Moore also sits in a tie for fifth with her 17 career home runs.

Stephanie Drapp concludes her season with a 5-1 record, 1.59 ERA, three complete games, 39.2 innings pitched, and 12 strikeouts. In her brief career, Drapp now has 15 career wins, just six away from cracking the all-time wins list. At season's end, it remains that Drapp is still not tired.

Behind Casey Moore's 13 hits, a trio of Student Princes led the offense with 12 hits each on the season and all three led the team in batting average -- Bethany Redman (.387), Shelby Miller (.375), and Hanna Blasinsky (.364).

The back-to-back shutout wins in today's twinbill marks the first doubleheader shutout sweep for the program since April 14, 2017 when the team picked off Marietta 3-0 and 4-0 in a conference doubleheader.
