WESTFIELD, Indiana -- The No. 8 Heidelberg University baseball team was soundly defeated in their first game at the Crossroads Crossover. HU fell to Wabash College, 15-1.
Heidelberg dropped to 1-2 on the season. Wabash moved to 1-0.
Locked in a scoreless tie in the top of the sixth, the Little Giants cashed in on a defensive miscue by Heidelberg that would have ended the inning. Instead, Wabash plated three runs in the frame.
In the bottom of the inning, the Student Princes had runners on second and third with one out, but came away empty handed.
With the lead and the momentum, Wabash extended their lead with a six-run seventh that featured a pair of triples.
As the reserves began to pour off the bench for Heidelberg, the Student Princes scored a run in the eighth.
Deaunte Fleming had a one-out double, moved to third on an infield hit by
AJ Stevenson, then scored on a single up the gut by
Jake Vanek.
Wabash added six more in the ninth, taking a 15-1 lead into the final half inning.
HU starter and reigning OAC Pitcher of the Week
Ross Thompson (0-1) went 5.2 innings, scattering four hits and striking out five. He gave up three runs, all of which were unearned.
Eric DeVore was the lone Student Prince with multiple hits.
The Student Princes will look to bounce back on Sunday. In a doubleheader, they face Franklin and Manchester, with a start time now set at noon on Field 5.
