'Berg wraps up 2019-20 season

MARIETTA -- The Heidelberg University women's basketball team wrapped up the 2019-20 season with a 66-47 loss away to Marietta College on Saturday afternoon.  

The Student Princes conclude the year with a record of 8-17 and a 4-14 conference mark. Marietta finishes up the regular season 13-12 and 9-9 in OAC play. 

Maddy Crawford concluded her illustrious career with a 13-point, 17-rebound performance, marking her 37th career double-double -- the 13th of her season and fourth against the Pioneers. In addition to Crawford zoned in on a triple-double and narrowly missed out, as she had seven blocks. Rounding out the box score, Crawford had a steal and an assist. 

Alli Adelsperger contributed 12 points, while Brooke Beamer chipped in eight points. Brittanie Ulmer finished with six points as well. 

The Student Princes garnered an early lead as Crawford's layup tied the game at two, and then Adelsperger put the side ahead 3-2 with a good free throw. Unfortunately, an 11-0 run for the Pioneers led to a significant brevity to the Heidelberg lead. Marietta would not give up the lead from there and led by as many as 19 at the final buzzer. 

At the end of the third quarter, a jumper from Brooke Beamer closed the gap to seven, giving the side life heading to the final frame. 

At the start of the fourth, Maddy Crawford's layup on the team's first possession trimmed the gap to five, but Marietta responded with a flourish, halting an chance at a comeback. 

Marietta was led by a trio of double-digit scorers as Alexis Enochs (15), Devin Hefner (14), and Marlo Taylor (13) all hit the mark. Taylor and Camille Cummins each had six rebounds to lead the team. 

Despite Crawford's 17 boards, Marietta held a significant advantage, hauling in 46 rebounds, compared to Heidelberg's 32. The Pioneers also out-shot HU 40% to 32%. 

At the ends of their careers, Maddy Crawford and Brittanie Ulmer both find themselves among career leaders in Heidelberg history. Crawford owns 894 points, 793 rebounds, and an 80.7% free throw percentage.  She sits 17th overall in career scoring and is among the top of the food chain in both rebounding and free throw percentage. Ulmer who finishes with 855 points and 169 3-pointers ends her career ranked 18th in scoring and top of the list in successful 3-pointers.

Fellow seniors Kirsten Kochel and Leah Bouillon also concluded their Heidelberg careers. Kochel added a rebound and an assist off the bench, while Bouillon contributed two points, a rebound, two blocks and two assists in the game.
