Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

'Berg holds on to upend the Quakers

WILMINGTON — The Heidelberg University women's basketball team found their revenge on Saturday afternoon, defeating Wilmington College by a final score of 71-68.

The Student Princes (7-12, 3-9 OAC) entered the game looking to make things right after succumbing to the the Quakers(9-10, 5-7) by a final score of 99-65 on home floor earlier this season.

Brooke Beamer reawakened her offensive touch after a poor shooting performance on Wednesday night as she collected 24 points on 11-of-22 shooting. Further balancing out her quality performance on the floor, Beamer dishes out six assists and collected five rebounds.

Brittanie Ulmer was second on the team with 19 points, which included a perfect 4-for-4 from the free throw line. Ulmer also swatted away a game-high three blocks. Alli Adelsperger chipped in with 11 points and four rebounds as well.

Rounding out the double-digit scorers was Maddy Crawford who registered 10 points on a frustrating 3-of-13 shooting. However, for Crawford, she led all players with 15 rebounds, tallying her 11th double-double of the season, 35th of her career and fifth against the Quakers -- her most against any opponent.

After just 3:30 of play, the Student Princes found themselves behind 11-6, but finished the quarter on a 14-9 run, flipping the score in their favor at the end of the first frame. HU got an injection of offense from Alex Carter, Sadie Chaney, and Hannah Kilps who all contributed baskets in the run of good form. Ulmer also added a quick six points with back-to-back threes.

Wilmington then flipped the script in the second quarter as they outscored Heidelberg by a margin of 20-9.

Out of the break, Kelly Noll connected on a 3-pointer for WC, that looked to set the Quakers on their way to another large lead. However, from there, The Berg outscored Wilmington 21-9, and re-took a three point lead at the end of the third quarter. Beamer's jumper with 2:47 remaining in the quarter re-established a lead HU would cling to for much of the fourth.

Adelsperger contributed six of her 11 points with three straight buckets for the Student Princes in the third quarter.

Both teams started the fourth trading buckets as HU looked to defend their lead and Wilmington clawed away to find a way back into the game. Eventually, with the Student Princes holding onto a six-point advantage, Wilmington went on a 10-2 run. The quick burst of scoring put the Quakers ahead 64-62 with 2:23 remaining on the clock. Beamer and Kennedy Lewis then exchanged successful jumpers before a three from Adlesperger with 1:27 left gave Heidelberg a 67-66 lead, which proved to be the final lead change of the game.

From there, two free throws from Beamer and two successful charity shots from Crawford sealed the 71-68 win in favor of The Berg.

Heidelberg held slight advantages in converted free throws, rebounds, steals, and converted field goals on the afternoon. Wilmington dished out more assists and shot a more efficient number from the floor and beyond the arc.

For the Quakers, McKayla Binkley collected a double-double of her own with a 19-point, 12-rebound performance. Noll (17) and Lewis (13) also reached double-digit scoring.

The Student Princes have now defeated Wilmington on the road for the second straight season after knocking off the Quakers 74-70 a season ago. Prior to that win, HU had not managed to beat Wilmington on their home floor since the 2001 season.

Heidelberg returns to action on Wednesday as John Carroll visits Seiberling Gymnasium for a 7 p.m. tipoff.
