Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Berg drops first match of the season

ALMA, Mich. -- Playing their second of three games over a four-day span, the Heidelberg University women's soccer team suffered their first defeat of the season away to Alma College by a final score of 2-0.

The defeat drops the Student Princes to 2-1 overall and improves the Scots to 2-1.

In a stale first half of offense, the Student Princes' best first half chance came in the 28th minute off the foot of Audrey Kaufman. The freshman picked up a loose ball in the middle third and marauded through the center of the field out-pacing her defender. Her strike from the top of the 18-yard box was stopped sharply by a charging Alma keeper.

Berg goalkeeper Meredith Bruce was called into action on four occasions in the first 45. Her best save came in the 39th minute, as she made an outstretched save to her left on a deep shot from the Scots' Lexi Russell.

The game took a turn in the 59th minute when Erica Campbell challenged for a loose ball in the penalty area. After contact, Campbell put the ball in the net, only to turn away in anguish as the referee whistled for a foul against her, thus ruling out the goal.

Just seconds after the Campbell disallowed goal, the Scots put the ball back into play and charged down the left side. Cutting onto her left foot, Paige Moore struck the game's first goal of the game with a nicely placed shot, beating a diving Bruce.

Six minutes later, Alma doubled their lead. Tori Aquilino earned a penalty kick and stepped up to convert from 12 yards.

In the 73rd, the Berg looked to get back in the game as Lexi Langwasser got her head to a corner kick. Lagwasser's downward header forced Ally Wentworth to a quick diving stop to keep the ball from crossing the line.

Time ticked away from the Student Princes as they pressed for a way back into the game. Unfortunately, the Alma defense stood strong, limiting the Heidelberg attack to just one shot over the final 15 minutes of play.

On the stat sheet, Alma out-shot Heidelberg 20-11. Of those shots, the Scots edged the Student Princes 6-3 in shots on goal.

The Berg will wrap up their busy week tomorrow as they stay in Michigan to play Olivet at 4 p.m.
