Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Student Princes fall in Battle of the 'Berg's

ERIE, Pa. -- In the Battle of the 'Berg's, the Heidelberg University women's basketball team found themselves on the wrong end of a back-and-forth battle all night at the hands of Wittenberg University.

The Tigers (1-0) emerged with a 59-48 win as HU managed a lackluster 30% shooting on the night, while Witt connected on 39% of their attempts.

The Student Princes (0-1) were led on the scoring end by Brittanie Ulmer who poured in 17 points, which included five three-pointers. Brooke Beamer was the other Heidelberg shooter to his double figures with 12. In all, nine Student Princes found the scoring column.

Defensively, Maddy Crawford was back to her old ways on the glass, hauling in 11 rebounds. Beamer collected seven boards, while freshman Bailey Walter added five in her collegiate debut.

Finding themselves behind at the first quarter break by two, the Student Princes leveled the score on their first possession of the second stanza on a layup from Maddy Crawford. From the 11-11 tie, Wittenberg proceeded to pour of the pressure, holding Heidelberg at bay for much of the quarter.

Witt's pressure on both ends of the floor pushed their lead out to as many as eight as they held HU scoreless for 4:21 of play. First a free throw from Leah Bouillon stopped the scoring drought before back-to-back three-pointers from Brittanie Ulmer brought them back to within one.

Unfortunately for the Tricolor, the Tigers would score the final two buckets of the half and took a five-point lead into the intermission. As the clock expired, Bouillon got off a shot that banked in, but the referees deemed it had not left her hand before the buzzer, thus the score remained 25-20.

After halftime, both teams exchanged buckets that kept the score within four and as close as one point throughout the third quarter. However, much like the second quarter, Witt tacked on a late layup that extended their lead back up to five heading into the fourth quarter, 40-35. Brooke Beamer saw her buzzer-beater attempt from the half-court logo clank off the rim, keeping the score at five.

In the fourth, the Student Princes found themselves needing to play an even greater game of catch-up as they slipped into a nine-point deficit. However, with under four minutes left to play, Maddy Crawford scored on a contested layup. Following the Crawford bucket, Mattie Overmyer knocked down a jump shot from the wing to close the gap. Ulmer then connected on a layup that gave the Student Princes hope to complete the comeback.

Ending the HU pressure was a crucial three-pointer from Kristie Kalis that put enough distance between the two sides to close out the game. Late free throws from Kalis and a layup from Delaney Williams truly did seal the game.

Four tigers reached double-digits in scoring -- Riley Culver (12), Korynne Berner (12), Kalis (11), and Williams (10). Culver led the team with nine rebounds.

With the loss, Heidelberg will play in the consolation game tomorrow afternoon against Cazenovia. Tipoff is slated for 1 p.m.
