TIFFIN -- The Heidelberg University women's soccer team fell to visiting Capital University on Wednesday, 3-1. The loss was the second straight defeat to start OAC action for the Student Princes. On a day during which her family made a surprise visit from California to see her play,
Victoria Perez picked up the lone goal for the Student Princes.
Heidelberg fell to 4-6-1, 0-2, while Capital improved to 9-3, 2-0.
The Crusaders opened the scoring in the fifth minute. On a corner kick from Jordan Fike, Lauren Bowe's header on the back side beat HU goalkeeper
Meredith Bruce.
Undeterred, Heidelberg tied the match in the ninth minute. On a corner kick,
McKenzie Perry was pushed down by Avery Hart in the box -- resulting in a penalty kick for The Berg. Perez, a freshman, struck the ball into the upper left corner, easily beating Capital goalkeeper Kelly Bachmann.
Less than two minutes later, Capital regained the lead. Fike tallied the goal, assisted by Carlee Murry. Her shot came from roughly 30 yards out and beat Bruce high.
Up 2-1 at half, the Crusaders added an insurance goal early in the second period. Hart, earlier whistled for the penalty, atoned for her misdeed with a goal in the 50th minute. Fike picked up another assist on the play.
Bruce made four saves in the loss. Capital held a 16-12 edge in shots.
Looking ahead, Heidelberg hosts Capital on Wednesday. The game is slated for a 4 p.m. start at the Hidden Valley Soccer Complex.
