Keep on sweepin' on

WILMINGTON -- The Heidelberg University volleyball team picked up another OAC sweep on Saturday, beating Wilmington College on the road -- 25-18, 25-17, 25-15.  Heidelberg improved to 17-3 overall, 2-0 in the OAC.  In total, 17 Student Princes saw court time in the win.  HU has not dropped a set in their last five matches.

Maddie Szawranskyj led the offense with 10 kills.  Jordann Gudorf hit. 333 and had eight kills and Alyssa Crusey had seven kills.

Setters Julianna Pena (19 assists) and Anna McNabb (14 assists) set up the offense and also added 10 digs apiece.  Libero Sarah Oney had a game-high 16 digs.

In the first set, Heidelberg came out hot and nabbed a 4-0 lead.  The hosts, though, retaliated by taking five of the next six points, tying the set at six.  The Student Princes would rebound by quickly rebuilding a four-point cushion.  Down 20-13, Wilmington caught fire out of a timeout -- taking the next five points to regain momentum.  A block by Olivia Cristian and Alyssa Crusey halted the run -- and ignited a set-closing 5-0 run by the Tricolor.

Wilmington (3-16, 0-1) got off to a fast start in the second set, taking a 3-0 lead.  The Student Princes settled in and won seven of the next eight points -- a run which elicited a timeout by the Quakers. The Berg maintained momentum throughout the set, which was capped by Shadra Hamsher's first collegiate kill.

Heidelberg jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the third, but the Quakers crept back in and got to within one at 8-7.  After a lengthy delay at the scorers table with HU up 11-9, the Student Princes ran away with the set.  Bolstered by solid play from the reserves, The Berg finished the set with an ace from Alyssa Edmond.

As a team, Heidelberg held an edge in hitting percentage -- .259 to .036.

Dating back to 2009, Heidelberg has won 31 straight sets against Wilmington entering Saturday.  That stretch comes as part of a bigger run in which Heidelberg has taken 45-of-46 sets from the Quakers.
With OAC action in full swing, Heidelberg hits the road to visit Capital on Tuesday.  The match in Bexley is slated for a 7 p.m. start.
