Berg tallies 11 blocks in sweep of Capital

BEXLEY, Ohio -- It was business as usual for the Heidelberg University volleyball team on Tuesday evening.  Inside the CAP Center, the Student Princes swept Capital University, 25-16, 25-17, 25-14.  The win was the sixth straight sweep for Heidelberg, which improved to 18-3 overall, 3-0 in the OAC.

Setters Anna McNabb (17 assists) and Julianna Pena (14 assists) were able to spread the ball to many hitters.  As a result, no Student Princes were able to eclipse the 10-kill plateau.  However, Amy Feczer (nine kills), Jordann Gudorf (seven kills), Olivia Cristian (seven kills), Maddie Szawrankskyj (six kills), Taylor Valentine (five kills) and  Alyssa Crusey (three kills) all had at least three.

Heidelberg's front row blocked a total of 11 attacks -- led by a six-block performance by Gudorf.  Feczer and Cristian each had five blocks.  In the back row, Valentine (10 digs) and Sarah Oney (9 digs) led the way.

Tied at eight in the first set, Heidelberg rallied for six straight points.  The run, capped by a Szawranskyj kill, put HU up 14-8.  The Student Princes maintained pressure and cruised to a 25-16 win.

In the second, knotted at 15, Heidelberg went on a 5-0 run.  Though a Capital kill ended the run, The Berg rattled off another four in a row -- highlighted by back-to-back blocks by Feczer and Szawranskyj which put HU on the verge of taking the set.  Capital was able to stave off the loss for one point, but a thunderous kill by Feczer sealed the 25-17 win.

Heidelberg, with little flair for the dramatic, put a stranglehold on the third set by taking an 8-2 lead.  Though the Crusaders were able to whittle the deficit to four on four separate occasions, the visitors were able to inflate their lead to as many as 12.

For the match, HU overpowered Capital with a hitting percentage of .308.  The Crusaders were held to .058.

Capital (8-14, 0-2) was led by Delanie Nahikian's eight kills.

The Student Princes will head back on the road for a rare Thursday match -- a non-conference tussle with Case Western Reserve University (6-12).  First serve in Cleveland is slated for 7 p.m.
