UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS -- Up against the No. 7 ranked John Carroll University Blue Streaks, the Heidelberg University men's soccer team was knocked off by a final score of 2-0. With the loss, Heidelberg slips to 3-12-1 overall and 1-7 in conference action.
The host Blue Streaks (14-2-2, 7-0-1) used their home field width to their advantage, along with the slick turf caused by the steady rain throughout the day to control the majority of the match.
As the first half passed, the Blue Streaks pushed for the match's opening goal. However,
Ryan Newman was up to the task as he stopped all five shots John Carroll managed on frame in the first 45.
After the break, JCU wasted no time finding that break through goal with a strike from outside the box in the 50th minute. Mario Aboumitri picked up a loose ball and caressed a shot to the back post, finally beating Newman.
Later, in the 63rd minute,
Jarod Chavez was penalized for a foul in the area, resulting in a spot kick for the hosts. William Turrittin stepped up to convert to the lower left corner from 12 yards.
Chavez made amends for his foul by saving a header off the line in the 77th minute, keeping the game at 2-0. Matt Nigro sent a strong header off a corner toward goal that beat Newman, but Chavez was on hand to clear away.
At the end of the night, Newman was credited with eight saves, while Connor Robinson stopped the two shots that he faced.
Bryce Zeleznik and
John Gall were the lone Student Princes to test Robinson.
