Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Berg closes out season in style

TIFFIN -- It was a long time coming, but the Heidleberg University men's soccer team finally managed a commanding offensive performance in their final match of the 2019 season on Saturday afternoon.

On senior day, the Student Princes (4-12-1, 2-7 OAC) defeated Muskingum University (7-11-1, 0-9) by a final score of 4-0 at Hoernemann Stadium.

Prior to kickoff the program honored the careers of Kyle Morton and Malik Mohammed. As well, student athletic trainer Morgan Fultz was recognized for her contributions to the program.

The first half got going in favor of the hosts early, but quickly simmered out. In the seventh minute, Bryce Zeleznik slid a ball across the top of the box to Morton, who helped it on to Jarod Chavez. There, the unmarked Chavez took a quick shot that beat Muskie goalkeeper Jacob Clevenger to the lower right corner of the goal.

After that, both teams had moments, but could not find the back of the net before halftime. For the Berg, Zeleznik saw a shot from about 30 yards from goal cleared off the line by a Muskie defender. For Muskingum, their best first-half chance came on a Logan Gray shot that was stopped by a diving Ryan Newman in the 42nd minute.

After the break though, Heidelberg put their stamp on the game and scored three second half goals to emerge with the comfortable win.

Just 22 seconds after the kickoff, the Berg broke through off the foot of Morton's third goal of the year. The senior received a pass from Jackson Janetski and scooped a finish past Clevenger to double the team's lead.

In the 61st minute, Nicholas Barnosky added his name to the scoresheet for the first time in his collegiate career with a follow up effort. Zeleznik saw his initial save saved by Clevenger before Barnosky followed up by smashing the ball into the empty net.

Just four minutes later, the game was sealed on Sigurd Ilestad's third of the season. Ilestad got on the end of a long looping ball from Morton after a corner kick and calmly caressed the header over a charging Clevenger. All three of Ilestad's goals this season came courtesy of if the Norweigan's head.

At the end of the day, Newman collected five saves as he remained fairly quiet in the Heidelberg net, while Clevenger stopped the three shots he faced.

In all, Heidelberg outshot the Muskies 21-12, and held the edge 10-4 on corner kicks.
