Game Recap: Football |

Berg falls to Mount Union, Mother Nature, 27-0

TIFFIN -- It was billed as a battle between two of the nation's best offenses.

Mother Nature didn't care.

While a steady rain affected play all day, the Heidelberg University football team fell to No. 2 Mount Union, 27-0.  Heidelberg, which had averaged 556 yards of total offense, emerged with 151 soggy yards.  Mount Union, which had averaged 552 yards, amassed 329.

The 329-yard output is MTU's fewest yards of total offense in a regular season since September 22, 2018.

Running back Montavious Yearby was held to 57 yards on 25 carries.  Reserve quarterback Wendell Morrison provided a spark with his legs, tallying 48 yards on one drive.

After trading punts on their opening possessions, the Heidelberg defense provided the game's first big moment.  With the Purple Raiders driving, Dylan Marder intercepted a pass by D'Angelo Fulford at the 25-yardline returned it out near midfield.

Mount took the ball right back with a strip-sack of Jimmy Gephart. The Purple Raiders would turn the miscue into seven points.  Josh Petruccelli plunged in from a yard out for the touchdown and Cory Barnett added the PAT.

The visitors scored on each of their next two possessions, sticking with a healthy diet of Petruccelli and back up tailback DeAndre Parker.  Mount Union led 20-0 at halftime.

In the third, Heidelberg possessed the ball for more than 11 minutes, but could not find the end zone.  The Student Princes appeared to be poised to enter the red zone on their second possession of the period.  Gephart, however, misfired on a pass that was intercepted by Harry Bowker at the Mount Union 8.

Petruccelli -- who had 194 yards on 40 carries -- added the game's final touchdown early in the fourth quarter.

Heidelberg had not held Mount to 27 points or less since a 1994 loss, 27-6.

The Student Princes return to action next week, at Muskingum (2-5, 1-5).  Kickoff in New Concord is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
