Heartache at Hidden Valley

TIFFIN -- The Heidelberg University men's soccer team fell in overtime, 2-1, to perennial power Ohio Northern University on Wednesday.  The loss dropped Heidelberg's record to 3-10-1, 1-5 in the OAC.

The defeat was HU's seventh one-goal loss of the season.

Ohio Northern (12-4-1, 4-2) struck first with a goal in the ninth minute.  A takeaway by Seth Gundlach near the top of the HU penalty area provided an excellent opportunity.  Gundlach snuck the ball inside the far post past a diving Ryan Newman.

Still down 1-0 in the second half, the Tricolor found an equalizer.  Down the left side, Kyle Morton danced and darted his way through the Polar Bear defense.  With space, Morton played the ball across the six-yard box to the right side.  There, Jarod Chavez was all alone.  He hammered the ball past ONU's John Lombardo.  For Chavez, it was his first collegiate goal.

Early in overtime, Aaron Shelton nearly ended the game with a shot that came off an ONU corner kick.  Newman, however, made a terrific save to keep the game going.

The Student Princes were not so lucky two minutes later.  Beelal Hasan fed the ball across the mouth of the goal onto the foot of Levi King.  King skied the ball into the top of the net, giving the visitors a 2-1 win.

ONU outshot Heidelberg, 18-4.  Newman tallied 11 saves.

Heidelberg visits Mount Union on Saturday for a 1 p.m. game in Alliance.
