Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Berg secures a rain-soaked win at BW

BEREA -- On a soggy, cold evening in the suburbs of Cleveland, the Heidelberg University women's soccer team finally found their way in OAC play with a 2-0 win away to Baldwin Wallace University.

With the win, Heidelberg improves their record to 5-7-1 (1-3 OAC), while BW falls to 7-8 overall and 0-4 in the conference.

The shutout, aided in large part by Meredith Bruce in goal and the back four of Amanda Sugrue, McKenzie Perry, Sophia Jackson and Kate Mundy, was the first for the Berg since the opening match of the season -- a 6-0 win at Defiance.

On this night, in the 12th minute, Heidelberg struck first. A goal kick by Meredith Bruce got deflected back toward the HU end.  There, McKenzie Perry sent the ball nearly 60 yards ahead to Erica Campbell.  There, the speedy senior played one touch to create space before left-footing a shot toward the right side of the goal.  BW goalkeeper Emma Bruno dove to her left, but the ball slipped past her and into the side netting.  It was Campbell's eighth goal of the season.

From the Campbell goal, the Student Princes were held without another shot in the first 45, but did well to limit the BW attempts to just four for the half.

In the second half, Sophia Jackson had a nice attempt as she stepped up to win a ball about 30 yards from goal. Her intervention bounced in front of Bruno and looked bound for bounce over her head. Bruno was able to pin the ball against the post to keep the Yellow Jackets within one.

On either side of Jackson's attempt, BW was pushing for a goal as they sent seven second-half shots toward the Heidelberg goal.

However, the Berg remained resistant and focused. They made their only other chance of the half count as they doubled their lead in the 77th minute. Campbell received a throw-in from Amanda Sugrue and drove to the goal line. There, Campbell sent the ball across where Madison Zimmerman slammed home a shot past Bruno to the left side of the net. The goal was Zimmerman's second of the year.

With the goal and assist against the Yellow Jackets, Campbell continued her dual-threat performances on the year as this was her sixth match of the year in which she has had at least one goal and one assist.

On the night, Baldwin Wallace held the heavy edge on shots with 11 compared to Heidelberg's three. Of the 11 shots, BW managed to get five on target, of which Meredith Bruce stopped all five. Heidelberg managed all three shots on target, beating Bruno twice.

Heidelberg will host the No. 18 Otterbein Cardinals on Homecoming this Saturday. Kickoff at Hidden Valley is scheduled for 1 p.m.
