Student Princes find a way over BW

TIFFIN -- The Heidelberg University men's soccer team earned a critical victory with a 1-0 win over Baldwin Wallace University on a blustery Wednesday afternoon at the Hidden Valley Soccer Complex.  SIgurd Ilestad scored the goal while goalkeeper Ryan Newman and the back line held the potent Yellow Jacket attack at bay.

The Berg improved to 3-8-1 overall and 1-3 in conference action.  BW dropped to 8-7, 1-3.  The Yellow Jackets held a narrow 12-10 edge in shots, but Heidelberg led in shots on goal, 5-4.

In the ninth minute, Cory Gilbert sent a long throw-in from the corner into the penalty area.  The ball bounced and skipped a bit on the wet grass.  As the ball bounced up, Ilestad redirected it to the far side of the goal with his head.  BW goalkeeper Patrick Mehal dove, but came up empty-handed.

For Ilestad, who converted to forward from goalkeeper this summer, both of his goals this season have come off of Gilbert's long throws.

Moments later, Dylan Keeling nearly found the equalizer for the visitors. From the top of the penalty area, Keeling blistered a shot toward the right side of the net.  Out of the reach of HU goalkeeper Ryan Newman, the ball was saved off the line by defender John Gall.

Keeling again had a brilliant look at a game-tying goal in the 14th minute.  With his right foot, he sent a ball that seemed destined to find the upper left corner of the net.  Newman, however, dove and got his fingertips on it -- pushing it off to the side.

The Baldwin Wallace offense, which averages roughly 3.0 goals per game, was held in check by Gall, Jalen Trammell and the rest of the Heidelberg defenders.

Newman made three saves, picking up his third clean sheet of the season.

Heidelberg will face Otterbein on Saturday, with a 7 p.m. start scheduled in Westerville.
