SB: Rough day at Frann's Field

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

TIFFIN -- There have been many great afternoons in the 3+ year history of Frann's Field. Thursday wasn't one of them.

The Heidelberg University softball team was swept in an OAC doubleheader by Baldwin Wallace -- 6-4 in nine innings in the opener, 13-0 in five innings in the night cap. As a result, Heidelberg (20-10, 10-4) slipped out of first place.

Haylee Patel had three hits on the day, leading the Student Princes.

GAME ONE: BW 6-10-2 BERG 4-9-2 (9 innings)

Scoreless through three, Heidelberg broke through in the fourth. Casey Moore walked and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. With two outs, Haylee Patel tripled to right to score Moore. Kaitlin Keys followed with a line drive single down the left field line which gave HU a 2-0 lead.

Kaitlyn Moore held BW hitless until running into trouble in the fifth. The three-run inning began with a two-base error on a pop up. With a runner in scoring position, Alex Dick drove in the first run with a single to right. After a bunt single on a sacrifice attempt, a bouncer up the middle plated the tying run for the visitors. BW took the lead on a groundout.

Undaunted, Heidelberg responded in the bottom of the inning. With runners on the corners, a misplayed ball off the bat of Casey Moore allowed Abby Barno to score.

A two-out single in the top of the seventh gave BW a 4-3 lead.

In the bottom of the frame, Shelby Miller nearly tied the game with a long fly ball to right that hit the top of the fence for a double. Pinch runner Lauren Wolf would send the game to extra innings, scoring on a single by Casey Moore.

Baldwin Wallace scored two times in the ninth inning to pick up the win.

Kaitlyn Moore (10-5) threw a complete game, striking out eight batters. She allowed three earned runs in the loss.

GAME TWO: BW 13-16-0 BERG 0-2-3 (5 innings)

The nightcap didn't go our way. The Yellow Jackets scored one in the first and three in the second before removing all doubt with a four-run third. For good measure, they tacked on a five-spot in the fourth.

Meanwhile, Heidelberg only mustered two hits off BW starter Sam Mott. Mott only needed 53 pitches to cruise through five innings of work.

UP NEXT:

A big test awaits the Student Princes on Saturday. Heidelberg visits Muskingum University for a doubleheader, scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
