Chapman fires no-hitter in OAC matchup

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

BEREA, Ohio -- Erin Chapman cemented her place in the annals of the Heidelberg University softball program history, tossing the ninth no-hitter in school history. She might even be the first pitcher in NCAA history to throw a no-hitter and earn a tie on the same day.

After squeaking by Baldwin Wallace 1-0 in game one, the Student Princes were forced into a 6-6 tie. The game was halted after nine innings due to darkness.

HU moves to 18-9-1, 7-2-1 in conference play. Baldwin Wallace falls to 8-15-1, 2-7-1 OAC.

GAME ONE: Heidelberg 1 Baldwin Wallace 0

Chapman was the story for Heidelberg in game one. The senior threw her first career no-hitter, striking out five and earning her ninth win ink the circle this season.

The Berg finally pushed its lone run across in the top of the sixth inning. Pinch hitter Shelby Miller led off the inning with a single and Taylor Hicks followed with a base hit up the middle. Miller was lifted for pinch runner Abby Barno, and Hicks and Barno advanced on a sac bunt by Renee Lovett.

With runners at second and third, Chapman lifted a ball to left field to score Barno from third and give HU the only run it would need.

Chapman's no-hitter was the first for the Berg since Paige Atterholt fired a perfect game against Capital in 2015. It was the ninth no-hitter thrown in HU softball history.

"Erin pitched one heck of a game ... It's not everyday you get to see someone pitch a no-hitter, let alone be a part of it," said Head Coach Kelli Williams. "She did a great job."

GAME TWO: Heidelberg 6 Baldwin Wallace 6 (9 innings -- darkness)

The Student Princes manufactured a run in the top of the first to jump out to a 1-0 lead. A sac fly by Abbey McKee scored Hicks, who reached via error.

Three straight singles by Lovett, Casey Moore, and McKee gave the Berg a 2-0 lead. The single down the left field line scored Lovett, but Moore was thrown out at the plate to end the inning.

The Yellow Jackets cut the HU lead in half in the fourth. After a fielding error, a double to left center field off the bat of Paige Loveless moved the score to 2-1.

HU plated three in the fifth to extend its lead to 5-1. With runners at the corners, a fielder's choice combined with an error gave the Berg its first run of the inning.

Miller followed with her first collegiate RBI -- a single to center to score Casey Moore. With two outs, Bailey Smith singled home McKee for a four run Tricolor lead.

Casey Moore added to the HU lead with a double down the left field line in the sixth to score Hicks.

The five runs would not be enough of a cushion for the Berg, as the home team tied the score in the bottom of the frame.

Two singles and a walk loaded the bases for Loveless. Loveless walked to force in the second BW run of the game. After the walk, starting pitcher Kaitlyn Moore gave way to Chapman to face Nikki Turner.

Following her dazzling performance in game one, Chapman fanned Turner for the second out of the inning. A wild pitch brought home the third Yellow Jacket run. On the throw to the plate, the throw got away and brought in another run, cutting the score to 6-4.

With a runner on third, Alexis Boledovic singled home the fifth BW run. Boledovic stole second and scored on the game-tying RBI single from Alex Kozich.

In crucial situations, the Heidelberg outfield threw two runners out at the plate. On a potential game-winning sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh, Bailey Smith threw out the runner at home from left field to end the inning and force extra innings.

Not to be outdone, Hicks gunned down a runner trying to score from second in the eighth inning. The throw was the senior's 19th career outfield assist.

As the sun had set in the Berea sky, the game was halted after neither team scratched across a run in the ninth. It was Heidelberg's first tie since the 1995 season -- an 8-8 draw with Bluffton.
