Box Score TIFFIN – Back at the friendly confines of the Hidden Valley Soccer Complex, the Heidelberg University women's soccer team looked right at home in their non-conference match against Hiram College on Wednesday. The Student Princes were able to strike off of a cross in the first half when freshman Talia Tobin scored her first career goal, while their defense was able to hold up to get the 1-0 victory.
KEY STATS
Heidelberg (2-3) is a perfect 2-0 at home this season, with their win today and the season-opening 3-0 win over Defiance at Hoernemann Stadium.
The Student Princes held a 16-13 edge in shots for the match, but were out-shot by the Terriers 5-2 in the first half.
Alexandra Farmer recorded the first shutout of her career in the match. The freshman made three saves as she anchored down the Berg defense.
FIRST HALF
The first period turned out to be a relatively quiet one offensively, as the two teams combined for just seven shots in the half.
Hiram (2-5) was able to get three corner kicks in quick succession in the first ten minutes of the match, but they were unable to get a shot on goal with those opportunities.
After withstanding that attack, Heidelberg found their own chance in the 24th minute. Freshman Danielle Rathfon was able to get past the defenders on the right side and played a beautiful cross to the back post. Tobin was in the right spot at the right time, as she was able to chest the ball into the goal to give the Berg the 1-0 lead.
That score would go on to hold until the break, as neither team recorded a shot on goal for the remainder of the half.
SECOND HALF
The second period turned out to be the polar opposite of the first, as the two squads combined for 22 shots.
Despite the increase in offense, there were not many threatening chances for either side.
With the 1-0 lead for the Berg holding up late, Hiram was able to win a pair of corner kicks, but neither turned into a solid scoring chance as the Student Princes finished off the shutout.
QUOTES
Head coach Nick Spell on the goal: "It was honestly something we've been working on with those forwards. Danielle was able to get behind the right side and play the ball in diagonal back and Talia made a great run and got her body behind the ball."
Spell on the defense getting a shutout: "That's something we talked about after the game...accept your role. They have some tough attackers on Hiram who have put in a lot of goals and our girls stepped up and were able to play some man. It was good to see they got a clean sheet."
UP NEXT
Heidelberg will remain at home for their next match when they take on Earlham on Saturday, September 19th. That contest is scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m. at the Hidden Valley Soccer Complex in Tiffin.
