Marquee Day for Berg Softball in Sweep of Case

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

CLEVELAND – The Heidelberg University softball team concluded their 2014 season with a clean sweep of the Spartans of Case Western Reserve, 8-5, 5-3. With their sweep of the Spartans, sixth year head coach Betsy Hada and the Student Princes redefined a winning season for the 'Berg softball program.

The Student Princes finish the 2014 campaign, 25-13, which eclipses the mark of 24-14 set by Hada's 2011 crew.

"We set a new standard for success this year because we played as a team," said Hada.

In game one, the Student Princes used two three-run home runs to get past the Spartans.

The Student Princes took a 1-0 lead in the first frame of the contest when Mikaela Mitsch, fresh off of her two homerun performance yesterday at Otterbein, knocked a sacrifice fly down the left field line. Mitsch's sac fly scored, senior Jami Wagner, who played in her final game as a Student Prince.

The Berg took their 1-0 lead into the bottom of the inning where Case Western collected two runs.

Trailing by one, the Heidelberg ladies exploded with four runs in the top of the fourth. With one out and two on, freshman Jordan Hux rocketed a homerun over the left field wall. On top of the Spartans 4-2, Wagner, The Berg's all-time hits leader added to her impressive total.

A Wagner double to the left center, scored freshman Rachel Garris to move the 'Berg ladies ahead, 5-2.

The Student Princes added on their final three runs of the game when sophomore shortstop Kayla Zachrich belted a long homerun to straight away center field.

The Spartans added two runs in the sixth and another run in the seventh before sophomore, righty, Paige Atterholt and the 'Berg defense closed out game one.

The win in game one marks Atterholts 13th of the year. The DeGraff native finishes the season at 13-5, with 12 complete games, 41 strikeouts and a stellar 3.01 ERA.

The Spartans gained the upper hand in game two with one run in the first. The score remained 1-0 in Case Western's favor until freshman Kyleah Brey scored sophomore Marissa Smego on a ball that went as a fielding error by the Spartans third baseman.

In the top of the sixth inning, another Heidelberg first happened when Garris blasted the first grand slam of her career to left field. The homerun marks Garris's second of the year and the third 'Berg homer of the day.

The Spartans added one run in the sixth and picked up another in the seventh off of Chapman, but the freshman showed poise. Chapman closed out Case Western to claim the 12th win of her inaugural campaign.

Chapman closes out her first year in the Tricolor with a 2.68 ERA, and 82 strikeouts.

Although the Student Princes placed an exclamation point on the 2014 season with a sweep of the Spartans, the victories came with mixed emotions.

The Student Princes had to bid farewell to their prolific leader, Jami Wagner.

"Jami was a team player on and off the field," said Hada.

On the day, Wagner finished three-of-seven at the plate with one RBI and one run.

Wagner closes her career as one of the most decorated players to ever tote the 'Berg Tricolor. Wagner leaves 'Berg softball as the programs all-time leader in at bats (526), hits (193), stolen bases (75), triples (14), and runs (121).

Following the 2014 campaign, Wagner has further exemplified why she is an incredible asset to The Berg as she climbing into the top ten of four single season record categories. The Alvada native sits atop the singles season at bat list with 146 in 2014 and finishes tied for third in runs in a single season with 34.

Her career is outlandishly decorated with a collection of post season accolades which include both athletic and academic honors and an Ohio athletic conference Scholar Athlete of the Month selection.

"Her contributions will leave a lasting impact on the future of our team," said Hada. "Jami will be greatly missed. I am proud to say that she is now an alumni of our program."
